Is cosmos around? I believe she got her current job because a recruiter at her company found her through Linkedin.
I have found it very helpful to figure out who I know where. That can be helpful if I'm looking to apply to a job at a company and figure out that someone I know from law school or my old firm or whatever can introduce me to the recruiter/hiring manager/etc. I can't keep track of where everyone is, so Linkedin does it for me.
It is also useful to vet witnesses or whatever.
I accept almost all requests, particularly in the industries I work for. But I have not accepted invitations from complete randoms or, say, the random husband of a random knottie who keeps trying to connect with me.
my dad owns a business and frequently says that linkedin is a key component to his strategy and success. i cannot see my dad and have him not talk about linkedin. he sounds like he should work for their marketing department lol
my h uses linkedin and receives requests for interviews weekly. unfortunately they are all for the field he is currently in and wants to leave. he is hoping to make some more connections with recruiters.
LinkedIn is an awesome networking tool, I know lots of folks who have used it to connect for informational, then real interviews, which have led to job offers.
It's not obvious, but you can export all your connections into a spreadsheet with names, titles, organizations, and emails. I have found that to be extremely useful.

I have a pretty recruitable job title, which is always in demand nation-wide. A lot of people where I work get frequent emails from headhunters via LinkedIn.
I feel like they are just key word search spammy emails though.
I don't have time to go through and uninvite one by one. Argh.
Lol! I would've totally accepted if I ever actually went on LinkedIn anymore (especially since it looks like you'll have plenty of connections ), I just still get the email notifications from them. I should probably unsubscribe to the emails, but I forgot my password, haha.
I am on page seven of my 71 pages of invites.
If I uninvite, will these people see that I invited and then uninvited?
Ugh. Mortifying.
All these folks asking me about pink and orange decor from 2006 got invitations.

Uninvite me and I'll let you know.
And omg, that randoms asking you about pink/orange decor are getting invites!
H's new job and the job he had before that were from recruiters that have found him through Linkedin. He gets a lot of potential employers contact him through there (a few a month) but he usually doesn't pursue them. It's definitely served him well, that's for sure.
You know what I hate about LinkedIn. Some random person checks out your profile...for what?!? Do you have a job for me? (Please say yes) or you were randomly clicking through people??

Although @misoangry and I have never met in person or emailed and we are not in the same industry, I feel weirdly left out that I wasn't one of the 710 people to get an invite.
Can someone please explain the endorsement thing? I have random people I don't know (people in my field generally, but have never met) endorsing my "skills". What is the point? How do they know if I'm good at these things? Are they expecting me to endorse them back??
They may or may not have called me and I may or may not have thought about it. Maybe. But the COL in SF may have been a deterrent in my decision.
I use LinkedIn to track down previous employee for Depo's, etc.. I have a ton of industry connections and I belong to a few industry specific groups. It helps me know what is going on, who is working where and what companies are doing what. It has been very helpful and I get contacted by a recruiter every few months. I use it so much looking for people and adding people my name appears first for many recruiters which is why I get the calls.
I had to pull all of my job duties off of it though because someone adverse to my company tried to use my profile against my co in court. So, be careful.

It prompts people to endorse you - it's really annoying. Like, it will say "Is MP good @ internet marketing?" and they can select to endorse me on that.
Thanks! I rarely go on except to accept invites, so I don't think I've seen that. I may have bad LinkedIn etiquette, I don't endorse people or respond to their messages if I don't know them haha
1) I've generated leads that have transitioned into valid business opportunities. I also get recruiters send me opportunities often. Feels pretty baller, must admit.
2) I am selective. Usually friends that I value their business acumen, people in fields that I enjoy, or friends/family that I like - mostly because sometimes opportunities come in the most random time. If you just write to me and say "you want to connect" (especially if you just use their stock form) I pretty much delete you on principle. Except if you're @misoangry, I guess.
3) I get such a pleasure from seeing people stalk me. It happens a lot. I KNOW YOU ARE INTERESTED, I HAVE AN AWESOME CAREER. Mwahahahahhahaa.
As the job market is getting better, I've gotten about 5 job offers via linked in over the past year. One of them was from Wells Fargo - the WF recruiter caught me on a bad day so we discussed, I ended up going through the entire interview process, was offered and eventually turned it down.
I also like the connections thing. When interviewing for my current role, I saw someone I currently worked was linked to someone I was interviewing with so she was able to put in a good word for me. While I have a large professional network, I would never had made that direct connection if not for linkedin.
This is a long story saying yes, I think it works (after you get through some of the garbage).

Yes, they will know because they got a notification when you originally invited them. Then when they get excited and click on it to accept, it will no longer be there and will display an error of some sort.
I have never gotten a job from LinkedIn, because I am happy at my current firm. However, I am contacted by recruiters and they are actually for legitimate and semi-appealing jobs.
I usually accept invitations if I have met the person or know the name, but have no hard and fast rule.
If I got one from you, I will ignore as I know it was a mistake.
