She is 41 weeks and 3 days pregnant and they just discovered it. They are going to do an inversion tonight and then c section if it doesn't work.
My poor sister's stomach has been HUGE for weeks. it all makes sense now.
I am annoyed on her behalf that they are just fucking discovering it. The baby clearly has been this way for weeks. Plus her fluid is starting to get a bit low.
All is well though. The baby will be born tonight somehow.
What are the odds they can even turn such a big baby? Anyone have any experiences they want to share?
Is this her first baby? I had asked my OB about breech babies and being able to turn them after her sub during one of my weekly visits said my baby was breech (he wasn't, WTF?!). Anyways, she said that if the mom has already had a successful vaginal delivery, she can almost always turn them. We didn't talk about FTMs though, which I'm sure is different.

That's exactly what happened to me, I was 41 weeks 3 days days and they did an u/s prior to induction. They found out she was breech. It was a surprise I had seen several Drs in the practice and all said she was head down. When she was born it was clear she had been breech for awhile and not just turned. All the Drs said nothing is 100% and it can happen. I was just relieved it was discovered before they tired to induce me. We discussed possibility of inversion and ultimately decided not to do it. Given the size of a 41 weeker, her position, ect, stress to baby and me. We did a csection the next day. I would make sure she really understands the sucress rate of an inversion that late. My drs would only do it that late under an epi and in the hospital ready for a csection in case of baby stress. That late in the game it is going to be very painfulIf. it had been discovered 36-38 weeks there would have been time for inversion or exercises like spinning baby Good luck to your sister!
I've had a few friends who have found out this late and had to have a c/s. All of them also say they wish they would have just done the c/s without trying the inversion, because it was painful and wasn't likely to be successful.
I had a fear that my baby was breech near the end because I was terrible at figuring out what body parts were what by the pokes, etc. I did a lot of internet reading on what would happen if she was breech and mostly read that inversions weren't really done often anymore and were unlikely to work. I hope everything works out for your sister and that her baby is delivered safely either way!

I tried a version with my second in an attempt for a vbac. My kid wouldn't turn, but the version wasn't that bad. It was uncomfortable, but it wasn't the end of the world.
Both of my babies were breech and they didn't discover it until a couple weeks before my due date. I didn't want to do the inversion (I read of risks) so I had C-sections with both. Two healthy babies over here! Sending your sis good vibes for a swift and easy delivery!
It's strange to me that they are just now determining this. My OB has told me at my last two appointments that mine is head down and where his body is positioned. As far as I know, she'll check every week until he's born at this point. It would be pretty unusual for a baby to turn that much after getting so big. There's not enough room generally.
I've known a few people who had luck with acupuncture (the cigar thing to your toe?) and my chiro says he can help but I'm not sure at this late stage any would be promising? It if she has enough time to try
If she's dead set on a natural delivery it can be done with a good ob, although personally I just wanted to make sure we both came out of the delivery as ok as possible so breach was one thing on my "dont even bother trying" list. I know a lot of women who feel let down if they end up in a c-section, so if that is her, just remind her the goal is to be holding a healthy baby, how she gets there is less important.
She did have an anterior placenta and they think this is what has thrown it off for so long. Whenever they struggled to find the heartbeat location they just thought it was the placenta.

Huh that's interesting, my SIL just had a very similar thing happen- she went in for an induction at 41+ weeks and my brother said it was like as they had the cytotec in hand ready to insert someone was like let's do a quick u/s and surprise! Breech. I was all wtf?? But she had an anterior placenta too
I had a friend who had luck with an inversion at the 41 week mark. However, she's 6' tall and has a long torso and her baby was spinning circles throughout her pregnancy. He flipped to breech just 3 days before if I recall correctly.
She had the inversion in the hospital and about 2 hours later while they were still monitoring she went into active labour. So there's at least one success story. She is a naturopath doctor herself though so I think she might have gone for a breech birth if it hadn't worked.
Best of luck to your Sister and congrats on your soon to arrive new family member!

Ugh. That sucks! But yikes, at 41 weeks the success rate is pretty low and the risk factor goes up. I hope everything goes well, no matter what she decides to do.

I can't believe they are just discovering it. Your poor sister. I was SO uncomfortable when mine were breech.
Both of my breech babies turned once I scheduled my inversions, so I never had one, but my midwife told me that they are less likely to work that late.
Sometimes they even flip halfway through your induction.
::nods:: I have seen this crazy shit. I have also been the one rolling in the US machine last minute because something doesn't feel quite right. It happens.
Eddy, it's probably best since her fluid was getting low. The only successful ones I have ones I have seen there is normal to high fluid. Congrats on meeting your new niece soon! I love baby girls. Totally partial, I know.
And I thought my 11 day late 9lb4oz girl was big. Congrats to you and your sister. I hope she has an easy recovery. I found that getting up and walking as soon as I could did wonders for my recovery.
