WTF, people?!
I like to get ahead of myself, so I was looking at apartments in Milwaukee. I found a decent looking one that said "small pets only (under 10 pounds)."
DUDE. Velociraptor is 12 pounds, and he's our smaller cat. Fatty exceeds the weight limit by over 100 percent.

Also, it's like they don't get that the fatter the cat, the less destructive it is. Do they really think Fatty has the agility or energy to do much damage?
His day is basically: 6am: MEOW MEOW MEOW I HAVEN'T EATEN IN THREE YEARS!!!! MEEEEEOOOOOOOOOW! 6:30am: gobble gobble gobble how fast can I eat my breakfast? 7am: nap time 4pm: TIME FOR DINNER! MEEEEOOOOOOOOOW! 6pm: gobble gobble gobble how fast can I eat my dinner? 6:30pm: nap time 9pm: TIME FOR DESSERT! MEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOW! 10pm: gobble gobble gobble how fast can I eat my dessert? 10:30pm: bedtime

WTF??? Granted our tubby is ~25lbs, but our two normal-sized cats at 12/14 lbs and our "tiny" one is 9lbs when her belly is empty and rumbling [insert "oh woo is her" emoticon)

Well, if it's an apartment, it might be the noise factor--we can tell when our big boy has decided to finally get out of bed when we're one floor below...(he hasn't yet, breakfast will still be there when he decides to stir, the bed is still warm.)

Well, to be fair, leaving the size/weight question aside for a minute, the biggest issue with cats and damage is usually cat pee. I'd think that with a weight limit of 10lbs, the LL is trying to discourage pets entirely.

Yeah, I'm sure it is. Of course, size has nothing to do with that. Fatty has never, ever gone outside the litter box.
Velociraptor? If we haven't cleaned it to his satisfaction, he will just poop in the corner. Never mind that he actually doesn't even get in the litter box to poop but instead just stands on the edges and perches. And if he doesn't like something we've done, he will spite pee on our stuff.
But Fatty is the sweetest, most docile boy ever. He just wants food and belly rubs and naps. (heart)
Yeah even my dog - a bichon mix - is more than 10lbs. This landlord doesn't want pets, but also doesn't want to entirely discourage renters from checking out the place.
I've run across that a lot as well since I've been looking for a new place to rent. Hank is 19 lbs. Harley who I think is an average cat is 13 lbs. The requirement that really irritates me is requiring that they be declawed. Nope, I don't want to rent from you anyway!
I don't think you have to weigh Fatty to know he's more than 10 pounds. LOL. [/quote]
Eh, either they really don't want pets or they have no idea what 10lbs equates to and assume all cats are fine, even fatty. I'm not a cat person and would think he is prob a little over 10 but not 20.
I rented where there was a 30 lbs limit and my bulldog is double that and then some (and it's pretty obvious -people always ask, man how much does that guy weigh!) But he is short and the apt place said he was fine - they just didn't want real "big" dogs like labs and Rotties.

I think it's probably a limit on dogs more than cats. A lot of landlords figure they can avoid the "vicious" breeds by making the weight limit small enough that none of the bully breeds fit into that weight limit. It's breed discrimination without being discriminating.
That's comforting knowing that I'll be trying to find a place that will take an 80 lb lab....
Well, I'm not going to say it's going to be easy, but I noticed this because I've never seen a limit that low. I've seen 25 pounds or 50 pounds. But 10?! That's crazy talk.
But I know you will find some place! You just may not have as many options.
First check up the vet said our cat was going to be dainty, probably 5-6 lbs. She ended up weighing about 18 lbs so I wonder which leg he meant when he said she'd be 5-6 lbs.
Sheldon is just 10 lbs and he is just coming out of kitten hood. His paws are huge, and he doesn't look like he fits his body as he is really gawky still. I suspect he is going to be a big cat.

There's several hundred on Craigslist that say they take dogs so I'm hoping one works out. It turns out a lot of places in the Third Ward take big dogs. H and I were down there this weekend and are seriously considering it if he can get a job here.

The struggle is real! Big dogs are less destructive IME, but having two 80 pound lab mutts made getting a place hell.
That's what I've always said. My sister's small dog has destroyed so many parts of her BF's rental, and my big dog just likes to move stuff around.
We were so spoiled with the only rental we've had to deal with. We picked it our before we had her and the owner lived big dogs and was all for us getting a dog. He was so excited to tell us where to run her and everything.
