The last year or so of my life have been shitty to say the least. I need some time away. I have a bit of money I can use for a vacation. I'm single, all my friends are married, so I'll probably have to go by myself if I go. Where is a good place to go on your own? Preferably someplace warm and in the US. I need to get a new passport, but don't really want to wait that long.
Eh, if you want to go with someone else- at least ask your friends. Married people do vacation separately sometimes! And if it were more of a long weekend? You can promote it as a "girls weekend". Trust me - you'd get takers.

I would do a spa type place where I can get massages and facials and has a great pool and cocktails so I can lounge around and drink and read. so maybe Scottsdale?
me and my married friends leave the kids and DHs at home for girl's weekends/trips 1 - 2x/yr.

I was actually looking at Vegas. I can get a flight and 3 nights for like $600. I may ask my sister if she wants to go, but her husband is a little whiny.
If I were going alone I would go to NYC, so much there I haven't go to do. But for a warm beach I'd go to Savannah, Ga/Tybee. I like beaches but only for so long, I prefer stuff to do.
I second asking friends though, I love girl trips! I'm married, have kids and still like them.
I enjoy traveling on my own. I went to Hawaii by myself and it was fantastic. I planned a trip for Florida, then had to cancel due to some family stuff. Recently I was in Des Moines by myself. Next weekend I'll be in Louisville on my own. I'm thinking Key West for this fall.
My best vacation ever - a week on our boat all by myself. I was so exhausted from stress and work. It was the BEST. We have a 32' boat and I don't like to take it out by myself so it was a dock queen/floating condo. I didn't leave my boat all week except to go to the office to pick up flowers my husband had delivered. I had all the food/drink I needed. I got up in the morning and went up on the bridge of our boat and I sat or laid and watched boat traffic on Sandusky Bay, cross-stitched, played on my computer. I ate breakfast/lunch/dinner up there. After dark I went below, watched TV. I went to bed about midnight every night, slept until 8. It was perfect.
If you live in the midwest, think about Kelley's Island on Lake Erie. Stay in a hotel or rent a cottage. You can fly in or ferry over. Kelley's can be as quiet as you want or it can be lively and you can Ferry over to Put-in-Bay (PIB) on Middle bass if you want more bars/live music/more shopping and restaurants. One of my favorite things on PIB is to go the Boardwalk to their upper deck. Get a pitcher of cold beer, some peel and eat shrimp and watch boat traffic on the bay. Relaxing, restful.
You can have a quiet week on Put-in-Bay too, don't stay downtown and if you come downtown, do it during the day. It's cute, quaint, fun.

Also, passports don't take that long. Mine was back in 3 weeks because mine was stolen and I asked about it on the board and others had similar time. So international might not be out of the question if you want to go in April!
Reasons traveling by yourself rocks - None of that, "No, whatever you want to do," crap. You get to pick all of the restaurants, no indecision, no bargaining, no giving in. Decide you just want to get dessert from a fabulous bakery for supper? Go for it! No one to judge that. You get to spend as much or as little time as you want at a museum or gallery. If you just want to lay on the beach, no one to bug you about going out and doing something. You will get to meet a wide variety of awesome people. Because you're traveling alone, people will be very welcoming of you and include you in their group and you'll get the chance to meet people you probably never would have before. I meet an oil baron from Texas in Maui, he was fascinating. Three sweet ladies from Alabama included me in their group at a luau. Met a group of business guys in Des Moines and learned about some upcoming companies and technology. Laughed and had a great time with a group of college kids a few weekends ago in Lincoln, the next morning I remembered I'm much older than they are, that was painful.
Depends on if you just want to relax in the sun or if you want to be busier. If I wanted to be busier, I would definitely go to a city. New York, Chicago, San Francisco would be my top contenders. I love to explore cities by myself, and there is nothing better than taking my sweet time in a museum without feeling bad about my companions.
My mom went down to the Florida Keys a few years ago by herself and raved about it forever. She had never travelled by herself before, but she said she loved being alone.
IF you want to go by yourself you can have an awesome vacation that way. if you'd rather have someone to travel with ask your friends, you might be surprised. I would love a girls trip! My BFF and I are actually working on planning one currently.
I asked this here recently and was recommended Puerto Rico. And that's where I am right now. It is so fricking beautiful. I love city trips usually for solo trips, but I needed the sun, so here I am, and by here I mean
“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
I've done NYC alone and it was fabulous. Just wandered whichever way looked the best at the time; are whatever looked yummy, went to bed when I wanted. I also did a trip to Chincoteague by myself, also fabulous. I love my alone trips.

FWIW, it took me less than a week to renew my passport. I went to the post office on Monday, specifically said there was no rush and that we had no travel planned, and the new passports (three of us) were in our mailbox the following Saturday. So don't let the passport renewal process dissuade you.
That said, I have a few solo trips ruminating. I want to drive the Lincoln Highway (I'll probably do that in stages, though; it's the first paved route from NYC to SFO). I want to drive to Chicago for a long weekend. I also want to spend a week or so in NYC museums. I love Seattle, and it's a great place to go alone. The Olympic Peninsula has some gorgeous driving destinations. I also want to do an RV type trip around and among national parks and monuments in the southwest. Oh, and Iceland. I have the next few years in the planning stages, I guess.
ETA: And I'm sorry your year has sucked. I hope 2015 brightens up for you!
I had 2 totally by myself vacations and I'd do them again in a heartbeat. First one, I went to Paris by myself for a week. I went where I wanted and did what I wanted. It was great as I didn't have to worry about making sure someone else was getting equal time.
Next time, I went to a Greek Island by myself (Paros). I needed a break, was at a research meeting in Istanbul and decided to use that as a place for some R&R. I hung out on a beach, swam and read trashy paperbacks while sunning myself. I was utterly exhausted and I did NOTHING for a week. It was great.
If I was vacationing alone and wanted to stay in the U.S. (but didn't want to spring for somewhere like Hawaii), I'd do one of two trips:
1) A spa/resort/retreat type place in Arizona where I could be very zen and relax and what not
2) Go to a national park and get lost in nature, hiking every day. I don't know how many would be warm right now. The big ones I want to go to are all in northern states (Grand Tetons, Glacier, Yellowstone, Acadia).
