I have nothing but wanted to commiserate. I applied to a really great job last night and it required I put in an expected salary. I put in what I thought was a totally reasonable amount (but a little higher then what I make now) and got a "Your qualifications are amazing, and we would love to meet with you, but we are not even going to consider you because you want too much money" email. I emailed back that I am negotiable, but who knows if they will even bother.
Good luck, hopefully they realize you are awesome and totally worth the money!

I hate that! The job I'm interviewing for wouldn't divulge a salary range either. On top of that, they spontaneously interviewed me for a position I didn't know about, so when they asked me for a desired salary range, I had NO frame of reference. I just doubled what I make now
so, he still won't give you a range? how can they be hiring someone and have NO idea what they are willing to pay?
i think this is super frustrating. it's a new aera for you - you've been an for ages, i mean, how the heck do you know what they compensation is like? i feel like his inability to even provide you witha range for the position is....weird. it reeks of him trying to low ball you and take advantage of the fact that you don't know what an approrpiate salary is.
Also weird is when you asked what you'd be doing, he said "making money," which squicked me out to begin with, but now, apparently you won't be making THAT much money.

Why do you want this job? I'm asking seriously. They wont really tell you what the job IS, and are saying they cant/wont pay what you feel would make it worth your while.

Eh, I think you went in with the first number in a negotiation. You have a little more liberty here because you do have an existing relationship with this guy. He'll counter and you assess from there. I think it was fine to throw out a blue sky figure. This is going to take a considerable amount of time and resources from you. You want to play hardball on this end, so it's worth it in 6 months when you're busting it.
