The amount of money I spend on berries that get inhaled in seconds is ridiculous. Fresh fruit was more of a treat growing up.
See, that's why I just can't buy stuff that's not in season and/or on sale. Right now it's still mostly clementines, apples, pears & bananas. Strawberries are starting to come from Florida now, so the price will drop.Â
#meanmom won't buy berries at crazy prices in the middle of winter. Nope, sorry.Â
Sucks you don't love your kids enough to buy them whatever fruit they want year round!!!11!!! I remember getting flamed for that. Good times.
I'm surprised you're just getting strawberries now. I've been finding them for at least the past 3-4 weeks on sale. I've had to go to the stores 2xs a week to buy strawberries solely because they have been polishing off two containers worth every three days. I can't wait until summer to have our own!
We spend a small fortune on berries every week. It's ridiculous but there are worse things that she could ask for! She has suffered from constipation in the past and boatloads of berries help her. So. I just spend the money and don't worry about it.
Yep, every week we spend an average of $15 on blueberries alone, probably $10 more for strawberries and one other type of berry. I tried buying a big bag of frozen blueberries for DS to give him when we're out of fresh ones, but that doesn't fly. He just pokes at them and says "soggy?"
Well, I spend enough on fruit buying in season. Like I said the last time we did this, I'm not spending double for strawberries that suck in December. Too bad so sad.
Kpouch, you are right, I guess I got my first round of strawberries a few weeks ago that were decently priced & actually good.

What winter fruits do your children prefer?
Reese goes to a babysitter and quite commonly she eats the equivalent of two apples there. (that is the DCP fruit of choice). So we don't usually buy her apples in our house--especially since she eats about 6 apples a week! But besides bananas, all she wants are the summer fruits: berries and peaches are her favorites.

DS refuses citrus but likes pear, apples, bananas. He will eat frozen peach slices. Watermelon isn't a winter fruit but always available for us and he loves it. He definitely prefers summer fruits like peaches, cherries, blueberries, melons and plums.
Edit: he absolutely loves asian pear (I've seen it called apple pear too).

Mostly clementines, apples & pears. Only DS and DH and occasionally DD2 eat bananas. I prefer summer fruits, too, honestly. But such is life.
I don't think 6 apples in a week is a lot? Or did I misread?
Didn't misread--but she pretty much doesn't want apples at our house especially when she is at the DCP 3 times during the week. She will have 2 apples there. So she prefers other fruits at our house. On the days that she isn't there, she will eat sometimes eat an apple. But still asks for other fruits instead.

I just buy whatever is reasonably priced at Sam's or Costco at this point. With three kids who eat fruit at every meal, I can stock up 1-2 times a week and it all gets eaten. I buy the 5lb thing of grapes if it's under $9, the 2lb thing of strawberries if it's under $5, the 2lb thing of blueberries if it's under $7, etc. They each eat a banana a day with breakfast, too.
DS would gladly eat blueberries for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but his second favourite is grapes. I don't find that the blueberry quality changes over the year, it's just the price that does.
