So we had this moms club event today and there was a raffle. I put ONE ticket in the basket with the cloth diapers and told the girl who donated it that if I won I would take it as a sign. I won. Yay? Lol.
I want to try them when W is a little bigger. They say 8 lbs and up, but he has no butt and is still in newborn diapers, so I think I have a little time. Wtf do I do with them?? The girl who donated them said I had to prep them differently because one was microfiber and one was natural. Um I'm assuming there is some place on the wide world of webs that can help me with that. But I need guidance. Also, if I tell you what kind I got can you suggest which would be the best to get some more of to start? I got one each of 4 diff ones:
Thirsties one size pocket Thirsties one size all in one Lalabye baby (looks like a pocket too) Kawaii baby all in one (but it has inserts?)
This is why I've never dome this. Its too much! (well, that and the poop. and laundry)

Yay you!!!
Naturally thrifty mom on YouTube has a really great cloth 101 series. Also, obbsandlala.
The biggest difference between cloth and disposables is laundry. For breastfed newborns (until you introduce solids) you don't have to do anything with the poop. It's water soluble. After you intro solids you just have to get the poop of of the diaper before you wash. You can use a diaper sprayer, a spatula, dunk and swish it or use liners. I use liners from Nickisdiapers. It's less than $3 for 50 of them. They're "flushable" but I don't flush them because I don't want them to mess with our septic system.
For washing, I do a prerinse with a tiny pinch of detergent and then a spin. This is to rinse out per and EBF poo so you're not washing in soiled water(Just an extra rinse cycle) then I wash in hot water with tide for 40ish minutes with the regular rinse that follows and I do an extra rinse. Easy peasy.

Oh and as for prepping, natural fibers need washed and dried a few times before they're fully absorbent and washed at least once separately so the natural oils are removed (and don't end up on the synthetics)
So wash the natural fibers once alone and then you can wash them all again together. Synthetics only need washed once to remove the factory gunk.

Seriously though. Very cool! I was looking at some thirstiest today at the event I went to. I won nothing. Anyway, I wash my natural fiber stuff with my towels and sheets the first few times and then in the cd laundry they go. I rinse and spin on cold and then a half a squirt of detergent and ways on "whitest whites" which includes an extra rinse at the end. I have no issues. Well my washer doesn't, I like CDs a little too much....

I have pockets and I do not spatula poop. 90% of the poop is plop-able on dd2 now and the ones that aren't dh rinses off in our wash tub and they go in as is. There has never been enough poo that it's a problem for me, but if it's really nasty I will run an extra pretense and not let it sit for a few days first.

I have always used disposable liners. I like the Charlie Banana pocket diapers. I got them on sale at Target but I'm not sure if they carry them anymore. They do hold up amazingly well and a lot of people buy used ones to save some money, if you don't want to spend the cash on a whole set right now.
Oh, and for washing, I use woolite but I use that for the regular laundry anyway. There are detergents you can't use with CDs because of build up.
We have always used pockets. I don't think they fit either kid until around 3-4 months, but I wasn't shelling out for newborn cloth and we BF struggled so both kids gained slowly.
I use a plastic knife for poop if it needs to be scarped, if not plop. But you wouldn't need to do that until he's eating solids. You could use them on N right now if you wanted.
I start using one sized diapers at about 8-12 weeks depending on the size of the baby. I used one sized pockets w/ DD1, now I use one sized all in twos - a shell system w/ inserts that snap in.
Anyway, the non-natural ones just have to be washed once then they're ready. I'd follow the advice above about the other!

I have a thirsties pocket and it snaps down really small. Kawaii run bigger than many brands. They're not my favorites but I know a lot of people like them.I've never tried lalabye.
I started CD after we ran out of disposables from the hospital. I used newborn sized stuff though. One size started fitting ds between 1.5 and 2.5 months depending on which diaper. I have a lot of different brands and styles. I like then all for different reasons.
They will all go onsale for earth day so if you're planning o wait a bit to buy more, that would be a good time to invest.

We use gDiapers with cloth inserts and a handful of pocket diapers - Charlie Banana and Jungleroos. I remember I had to run all the inserts through the washer and dryer like 6 times to prep them. Now, we toss the dirty diapers in a big diaper pail (Planet Wise wet bags for the pail are awesome). And wash every 3 days. They go through one "rinse and spin" cycle, and then I wash once with cold water and once with hot water, and sometimes I do a second rinse and spin. I use a small amount of All Free & Clear detergent (our regular). Everything except wet bags and the plastic pouches from the g's go in the dryer, and I usually run them through twice. I don't scrape poo. It's either plop-able (and we flush the wipes too), or we use the diaper sprayer. When we had a non-low flow toilet, it was easy to just flush and swirl, but when we switched I splurged on the sprayer and love it. But, yes, don't even worry about it with newborn poops.
Would it make sense to buy some of 2 diff kinds to see which I like better? Between the thirsties it seems like the pocket is a better choice because even though there is the extra step of reassembling them all the parts get cleaner (and you usually add inserts to the all in one anyway, right?)
Anyone want to recommend another brand to try with my skinny buttless but relatively tallish baby?

My babies are neither skinny nor tall, and they have plenty of junk in their trunks, but my friend with skinny, long littles had great luck with Flips. I think the inserts on those snap in? Not sure, but she loves them.
We are big fans of best bottoms which are similar up flips but I like better because they're double layers of PUL and have leg gussets. Flips don't snap unless they changed them. I like flips for other things.

Both of mine are tallish skinny butt-ers (though N is PT now)
Stuffing pockets really isn't too bad. I think my thirsties pocket or my charlie banana get the tiniest. The Charlie banana has a funny way of adjusting the leg elastic though. Bum genius 4.0's fit really well and also get pretty small. I have flips but I just use prefolds or some of my thirsties hemp or fab doublers inserts in them usually. They do not snap in. Best bottom has snap in inserts and they're pretty trim. My favorite all in one is smart bottoms smart one. They have a nice hip snap and the soaker folds out so it cleans well and dries quickly.
Blueberry, Nicki's and Kawaii are all relatively wider but still fit okay.
I do suggest trying different styles and brands. I almost always just buy what is on sale or something sold as seconds to try and while I have favorites I have yet to try something and totally hate it.
Set up an account where ever you buy them from before you buy to earn reward points. Some cloth diaper stores also have coupon codes for free diapers or a percentage off. You can almost always use code FIVE for 5% off at nickisdiapers. Kellyscloset typically has a spend so much get a free surprise diaper code too.
I bought almost all of my diapers from allthingsdiapers.com (it's a local to me store that is also online) they have free shipping, and a buy x amount get 1 free code almost always.
I also bought a lot from kellycloset.com
We exclusively use BGs 4.0 pockets, and whatever randoms I have from the free diaper codes (A lot of kawaii)
I suggest not getting a lot of velcro ones, snaps are better, and toddlers have a harder time taking off snaps than velcro.

Ok, I'm doing it guys.
Is 7 bumgenius 4.0s for $105 a good deal? Thats the deal they have now, plus I would get another free one for spending so much

Cotton babies .com is also having a seconds sale on the bumgenius diapers and that's a pretty good deal too. Most of mine are from the seconds sales and I've never found a problem. We use 4.0s (pockets) for daycare and suck mostly with flips are home. I have flour sack towels and some Gerber cloth diapers that I trifold to go in them. I like not stuffing and just tossing it all together in a drawer.

I'm honestly pleased with my bgs and hesitate to use anything else. I don't feel like they are too expensive now that we've been using them for 13 months on 2 kids. As long as you don't go nuts with prints and a huge stash, it's reasonable I think. I have 18 4.0s and 8 flips (I think?) and I wash every third day. Buying seconds and supplementing with flips makes it possible to stretch the budget.
I do love BGs and my best bottoms and I think to some degree you get what you pay for. I'd certainly try an Imagine, but I wouldn't go for the whole stash from there yet.
Ok, one more question... Anyone use imagine baby diapers? They are less expensive
I love their covers. Imagine newborn cover was actually favorite for the nb stage. It snapped down very small and fit for almost a year.
I've never tried imagine pockets or AIO. I have a Nicki's brand pocket. I ordered 3 in chevron print when they were released but 2 were defective. I like the one I have thought. It's much wider than BG or thirsties, though it fits ds fine.
I think imagine and Nicki's are both buy one give one so for every diaper you buy, they donate one to a CD giving program, which is pretty cool.
