Say your kid didn't poop for four days and is complaining of stomach pain. You give him a laxative, he poops. Doesn't poop for three days, complains his stomach hurts. Do you a-just give more laxatives or b-bring to pediatrician?

I'd bring him in since he is older. I know constipation is more common in babies and dd went several days without pooping and we didn't have to bring her in unless the laxatives didn't work. With an older kid, I'd want to be sure.

What do you think KC? I think this is a go with your gut kind of thing. I probably would just give another laxative and then add more probiotics and fiber to his diet but if you feel like he'd benefit from a trip to the pedi, I think that's completely reasonable.

Constipation is common...the dr. will tell you dietary changes you can make and probably suggest miralax or other things...do you need the doctor to help you decide what changes are appropriate for your kid? If so, go, if not, make the changes yourself and call if changes don't help.
*from the mom whose kids take miralax daily (I hate it but it's what works for us)
I'd go in to make sure there isn't a blockage, but I'd also start dietary changes immediately. I know you aren't a fan if Miralax but it works very well for us.

He eats a fiber rich diet and takes probiotics. He's been a daily pooper since he left the womb.
His stomach is visibly distended and hurts. I did take him in. Dh was acting like this was something odd to take a kid to the pedi for. Outside of Tylenol for a fever I don't mess with medications even OTC for kids. I did call first but they told me to just bring him in.
I'm planning to call our pedi tomorrow and ask for an x-ray for DD2. It's been over a month of painful pooping and I want them to rule out a blockage or some other problem before just prescribing miralax. She's much younger but still curious about what yours did.
DD1 has been struggling with consitpation since JANUARY. It is a beating for both of us. I will admit I haven't given the miralax daily like I should, but we are from here on out. Her problem is once it started and she figured out it hurt, she freaked and is now holding it in. It is AWFUL.

Luckily it seemed to be just constipation but she could tell upon examination we needed to treat immediately vs giving the natural stuff some more time. We are doing a seven day trial of miralax and I'm going back in. She said that sometimes kids need to do a 4-6 week run of it to be fully cured. I feel very uncomfortable with that but we can discuss further after that point. I'm very concerned that this isn't his norm and he took a nap in the car which he hasn't done since 3/went to bed early. Hopefully it does the trick and he's feeling better soon.
