We had a crawfish boil at home for DS1's first birthday. It was family and our friends, the few kids that came were all a few years old. I'd look at who you want to invite before reserving Gymboree.
For DS' 1st birthday we did a really intimate party (ETA: at home) with only our immediate families. I displayed pictures from his first year and we took our time opening gifts. It was kind of sentimental but he was the first grandchild on both sides, so I think everyone enjoyed making a big fuss of it.
Ever since then we've done the typical crazy kid party thing.

We had a rainbow themed backyard party. She has a summer birthday Afternoon. Heavy snacks, lemonade, used tea, beer and wine, cupcakes and ice cream bars. We had a kiddie pool and sprinkler. I spent too much time and energy making cute food and it wasn't worth it. The next year we catered delicious fried chicken and I was much happier.
We had a nautical themed party at a Brazilian restaurant on the water. It was 25ish people with mostly very young kids so I did really fun party pails with bubbles and stuff for the kids and we kept it to just a few hours. Brazilian food and gourmet cupcakes and a candy bar kept everyone happy
