And it's not like Mary didn't attempt to sabotage several of Edith's romances over the years?
BAH. @songforyou I have to step away from the keyboard. I'm just even saltier about everything after spending a week with my sister. Who didn't even ask me one question about myself the entire time I was there. You folks on this board know more about me than she does.
True but Mary sabotaged Edith's relationship's she didn't put Sybil at risk to get one over Edith.
First of all, on bringing my two faves, Lady Mary and Betty Draper Francis together. Strong work.
Wrt to your sentiment, however, I think we both know Edith would be picking her teeth up off the floor if she even had a daydream about it!
Zipping up flame-retardant jumpsuit . . . . if Edith bitch-slaps Mary, I hope she gets it dished right back to her. Mary can be pretty cold, but it doesn't get much colder than adopting your child out and then changing your mind and taking her back . . . twice.
Oh hell no. The only reason her child was taken from her was bc of family pressure. She was dying to be Msrigolds mother. There is nothing colder than Mary this season to Edith after they had confirmation of Gregson's death.
#teamedith
You know what is colder than Mary was to Edith? When Edith tried to ruin Mary with the Pamuk story!! That was atrocious.
No. NO. The Pamuk story was a.) true, b.) a reflection of the lifetime of cruelty pretty and preferred Mary had shown Edith, and c.) when they were like freaking 20 years old. Mary is cuntier NOW, in her 30s. Grow up, Mary!
You've got to be kidding me. It doesn't matter whether it was true or not. Mary expressed condolences to Edith when they learned about Michael (NOT THAT WE ALL DIDN'T KNOW THAT DUDE WAS DEAD, ANYWAY). To be perfectly honest, no one really gave a damn, except Cora and Robert, so I don't know why everyone is going hard on Mary, but regardless, she wasn't cruel to her. She just wasn't vested and why should she be? These two sisters don't like one another and neither of them is nicer to the other. The only difference is that Mary continues to win at life and Edith continues to lose at life. Edith isn't nice to Mary, but Edith gets the sympathy vote, so aw, poor Edith. But not me, to hell with that and I almost always root for the underdog (I don't know if you guys watch RHOBH, but they are basically Kyle and Kim Richards...and I don't feel sorry for Kim Richards either, because even though she's the underdog, much like Edith, she's an asshole).
Wrt to Pamuk though, you have to be a real cold-hearted bitch to try to ruin your sister and make her non marriage material during a time when you're basically garbage as a woman if you don't get married. That was despicable. And don't even get me started on how self-serving, self-involved and cold-hearted she was to take Marigold away from her mother. But I'm going to let Team Edith act like that's comparable to getting a new haircut the day after THE DUDE WE ALL KNEW WAS DEAD ANYWAY was officially pronounced dead.
Barely. And probably because Mary is a mother who is so busy that we never see the kid. Here is what Mary ACTUALLY said:
“Well of course it’s terrible,” she says to Anna. “But what did she think he was doing? Living in a tree?”
the really shitty thing about revealing the Pamuk daliance is it would taint the entire family so not only was she making Mary unmarriagable she was affecting Sybil's ability to marry well also. And that's why it was a shitty thing to do, if it was a straight shot at Mary I'd be more you get what you give but she was knowingly dragging Sybil into it and Sybil was a totally neutral party.
Terrible? Yes, but she was in her 20s and Mary was already a bitch to Edith. They both are despicable, but Mary wins.

To be fair Mary is missing a LOT of pertinent details. All she knows is that Edith and Michael had a thing for each other we don't even know if she knows about the pre-engagment. She absolutely doesn't know that Edith had lost the father of her child. Mary lost her husband and her child's father so in her (fairly self centered) mind if she could keep it together then Edith should be able to handle officially finding out her boyfriend is dead after knowing it was likely for over a year.

Uh Sybil was 18 this was right around her debut, which is part of why it was so awful if the scandal had hit at that time Sybil's season would've been ruined.

Key words - to Anna. What does that have to do with her being cruel to Edith, which is the point being discussed in this thread?
Also, Mary's parenting was a sign of the times, just the way children were parented in the U.S. in the 50s was a sign of those times and the way people parent today is a sign of our times. What is not and was not good parenting in any of those times is taking a child away from the only parents and siblings the kid ever knew because THE DUDE WE ALL KNEW WAS DEAD ANYWAY is officially pronounced dead.
That was just the tip of the iceberg on her non-feeling thoughts on Edith losing someone she cares about. why does it matter that people thought he was long dead (by the Nazis)? I know this is all TIC but that argument is just odd.
Mary, making it the Mary Show, Mary: I suppose you disapprove? Edith: Not especially. I’m just amazed that even you would choose the day after I learn the man I love is dead to try out a new fashion. Cora: I don’t believe that’s quite fair. Edith: And if that weren’t enough, you’ve planned a jolly picnic for Saturday. Am I really expected to join in? Mary: Hopefully not, as you usually spoil everything.
She is nothing if not snarky and I don't even get her anger. Girl, let it go. I know you are trying to win the suffering Olympics, but your husband died and you've had time to move on. This season was just too much Mary being a pita. I love the other characters but even Bates AGAIN admitting to something is too much.

Again, neither of them is kind to the other. Edith isn't somehow better because she's miserable and not as witty. It totally matters that we all knew THE DUDE WAS DEAD ANYWAY, because the family had already grieved as much as they could for a man they met, what, twice? No one knew Edith had given birth to this dude's baby. In their minds, a dude she was into and briefly dated died two years before. The announcement was merely a formality. What exactly were they supposed to do, beyond extend condolences? It's not anger, it's indifference. The difference between Edith and Mary, as it relates to their relationship, is that Edith wants Mary to be unhappy...she craves it. Mary just doesn't give a shit about Edith lol. She dislikes her to the extent that she wishes she weren't around (making life miserable for everyone!), but other than that, she's simply indifferent toward her, and that only fuels Edith's misery. Mary didn't think of the picnic or go get a haircut to make Edith upset, she did those things because as usual, she just didn't think of Edith.
I really don't get the misery bitchness that is Mary. I think Edith used to want Mary to be unhappy. After that kid, not really anymore. But, I get I am bec with Mary as you are with Edith. I can't really defend either, but I will fight against defending of Mary. Even her grandmother told her to knock it off.
Mary and Edith are the sibling equivalent of the conflict in the Middle East. Both have behaved so atrociously towards each other over the years that at this point neither of them is in the right.

Dumbledore tells Harry that indifference is far more damaging than hatred.
Dumbledore tells Harry that indifference is far more damaging than hatred.
(Team Anna here; both Edith and Mary are jerks)
I feel like that's something only a person who's never been hated would say . I'd definitely rather be ignored than sabotaged.
Actually, I'm not sure I agree in a bigger picture sense. Dumbledore's point was that being consistently thought of as unworthy of notice is really damaging to your self worth. It's like you're sub-human. If someone thinks about you enough to hate you, you're at least an "equal" opponent.
Maybe you're right that if I have otherwise good relationships and we're just talking about one problem individual, I'd rather that one ignore me than sabotage me. But, Edith seems thought of as somewhat "lesser" by a lot of people.
