A friend and her daughter dropped off the nicest card and book for us when they found out about Tucker. H came home last night to find it on our front porch.
We're friends, but not close, which almost makes it even more thoughtful. Anyway, I was about to send a thank you note but am wondering if that seems too formal? Should I email? Or just thank her next time I see them at school (although that may not be until next week)? Not sure if it matters but she is in no way a formal/etiquette type of person.

I would send a card, with short notes of thanks written by the kids too. I think it would be a sweet and personal thing to receive for such a sweet and personal gesture.

Cards are always nice and welcome in my book. If she would have sent you something online, I might feel differently, but she made a point to come by and drop it off personally, and I think a nice personal thank you note is in order.
Since it was left on your porch I'd send a quick text or email saying I got the book, thanks. But then I would follow up with a real card signed by everyone.

Thanks all! I was leaning towards a note but wasn't sure. They live like 3 blocks away so the note should get there quickly, but I think I will send an email first just from me (card from the family).

I like sending cards though.
This is a terrific idea. If I was the dropper-offer, I'd be a little nervous to just leave it not knowing if it would be picked up right away.
