That's totally weird. DH just had his through kaiser and he didn't have to go through his PCP at all. He did have to watch a video that basically emphasized the importance of using condoms until the all clear at 10 weeks. He had one appointment with the urologist who completed the procedure (no surgeon as far as I know).
In fact, my obgyn made it clear that it was much more of a pita to get a tubal litigation, which does require a class. And, you know, surgery.

We're in nor cal and I LOVE Kaiser. Especially with the cluster that was my gallbladder surgery/incompetent PCP when I was on a different insurance plan. People complain about Kaiser and the of choice, but I don't think they've usually experienced how bad healthcare is with many insurance companies. At least I can get my freaking test results online!

Thanks for all the input. I will definitely tell him to clarify the procedure with their member services. I still remain upset with the dickhead doctor though. Eff that guy.
For now, I'm dealing with DD1 who is working on her 7th ear infection in 5 months. She's on the road to tubes.
Apparently tubes rule my life right now. One tube needs to be placed and the other tube needs to be broken.
In my experience, doctors rarely know the ins and outs of insurance. I'd find a urologist and call them and see if they take your insurance and try to just make an appointment.
that isn't how KP works. It's an insurance with their own doctors. You go to their facilities or pay out of pocket for everything.

Lurker here, but when my DH had his vasectomy, I had to sign a consent form like someone else mentioned. The urologist would not perform the procedure for any married man without consent from their wife. Luckily, he did not have to go through classes or anything like that.
Jesus. That's a lot of hoops for a grown man with children to jump through. I really hope our insurance isn't that complicated when it's time for H to get snipped.
And I would stand your ground and make your H get the V. Even with all the hoops.
That's fucking ridiculous! DH just had his (second) vasectomy and we just called our PCP for the name of a urologist. Called the urologist and scheduled a consultation to talk about what the surgery entails. Then scheduled the procedure with that same urologist. So 2 appointments-consultation and surgery.
I'd be blowing up whoever is in charge of this cluster duck of a process.
Different insurance companies have different policies.
It's not like there is someone you can call to bitch at for the policy that would be able to change it LOL
And can you imagine being the poor CS rep who is getting reamed for a policy they didn't even create?
As that person, I can tell you it fucking blows. Most of the time we totally agree that the policy is stupid, but we can't tell you that. It's so frustrating to agree with the person who is yelling at you but you can't tell them that so instead you just have to sit there and get screamed at. Ugh.
Eta- I would call though and verify that is the process. It may well be the GP has some weird attachment to his balls, because WTF to that comment, and so he's making it harder then it needs to be to avoid doing it.
I would be getting a new doctor after that comment regardless of the insurance rules.

That's ridiculous. It infuriates me that women's fertility & men's fertility are treated SO differently. If I want a tubal, all I have to do is make an appointment with my OB to get one done - AND it's covered 100%. If my DH wants a vasectomy, he has to go through the PCP/Surgeon referral hoops and it costs us the standard surgical fee ($150 - $200 depending on where it's done). Apparently the affordable health care act is only concerned with WOMEN'S reproductive freedom.

I have Kaiser Nor Cal as well and I love it. They do require classes for everything though-We had to go to one to get our Harmony test for this pregnancy. Usually you just need one referral from PCP though. Seems a little strange they're asking for all that for a vasectomy.
