One pedi told us my DS had eczema and my new pedi diagnosed it as psoriasis. Every morning we slather DS with Aveeno Baby Lotion and at night we cover the affected spots with a prescription (desonide ointment) which we cover with Vaseline to seal in. He's been doing well since last spring.
I would take him to a deem or switch pedis to get a referral if you need one. I'm sorry sweetie. How frustrating it must be for all of you.
I know, but it's really difficult to find a reputable office on our insurance. It took us 3 years to find this place. I mean, I'm not trying to make excuses I just keep hoping somehow with some magical blend of something i can ease the eczema.
Maybe when you talk to him/her, describe the stress and worry it is causing you and him. It's not just about whether or not the skin will eventually get better; it's about your quality of life for however long this is going on.
E.T.A., also, I have psoriasis. I had a patch that other doctors had been giving me creams for for more than a year, but nothing worked. I went to a derm, got cream for psoriasis, and it was like a miracle. After a year, it only took 2 days to go away.
I struggled with eczema all my life. Nothing worked. I saw numerous docs/deems/allergists to no avail. I was diagnosed with Celiacs two years ago and my skin has been clear since I went gluten free. It wasn't eczema, it's called "dermatitis herpteformis." The ONLY treatment that works is Dapsone and a gluten free diet. May I ask where the rash is? Could you pip?

Yeah, I would go back and demand a referral. Sorry you are going through this. I am sure you have tried it, but wanted to say it just in case, but we use Neosporin Eczema cream? It works well for DS and for DH's cousin who has very bad eczema. Since she started using it she basically has no issues. It is sold next to the neosporin vs. the lotion.
I've gotten the same comments about DSs eczema and his RAD which is now asthma. It's infuriating. We see an asthma doctor now. His eczema isn't that bad. He's had some patches on his legs that won't quit. My best friend gave me mustela milky bath oil and the patches are almost gone after 2 baths. Have you tried that? Please don't punch me in the face, I'm sure you tried everything but I wanted to throw it out there. I'm sorry your pedi is being a dickhead

This was one of things they tried for my hives. It didn't work in my case, unfortunately.
BUT. Funny story. The chemical name is diaminodiphenyl sulfone and I also happen to use it at work as an epoxy curing agent.
If it is a gluten-related rash, stay away from Aveeno! People who have the DH rash (celiacs), can also react to oats/oatmeal. I used it religiously, since it's made for eczema, but it was just fuel on the fire.

everywhere. tops of feet, hands, backs of knees, creases of elbows, a few rando spots on his belly and back. He's asleep now but I could send you pics tomorrow.
Is it symmetric and mostly around joints?
ETA what I mean is both elbows, both knees, both ankles, both wrists, etc.

You need to get a blood test for celiacs. That's almost exactly where I get mine too. Inside of elbows, backs of my knees and legs are my tell-tale spots. DO NOT take gluten out of his diet until they test him. Doing so can skew the results and give a false negative. Being gf now isn't awful and there are a ton of us who can help, if it is DH/celiacs.

I wanna hug you both. Have you tried the angle of pleading for your own sanity and peace of mind can you just please have a referral. Pretty please with sugar on top give me a referral?
How itchy. REAL itchy? Like, itchy enough to make him cry?
I think you need to get this checked out.
Pretty itchy. He asks me for lotion all the time. No crying, sometimes at night but that could be for a million other reasons.
I know how incredibly frustrating this can be. I used to make myself bleed because I'd scratch so hard. I had a Rubbermaid tote full of failed lotions and potions. Push tour pedi to refer you AND draw the bloodwork. There's no need to wait. The quicker the results come back, the quicker you guys can both get some relief.

Im sorry. That is so frustrating. This definitely sounds like something that deserves referral to a derm. I would try to find a new pedi if he/she is not offering any suggestions and still won't refer you to a derm. In the meantime, a few weeks ago someone on the longest shortest time mamas group on Facebook posted an eczema success story. She was told to only bathe with water - no soap except diaper areas. Keep him greased up with Vaseline at all times. She was told not to use any eczema lotions or washes because all contained alcohol which was probably aggravating his eczema. She posted before and afters and they were pretty amazing. Good luck!

I'm sure you tried every angle.
I guess I'm just gonna have to say "give me a referral or I will find another doctor who will". I have begged them before but they've always led me to believe that this different thing will work, so try it b/c a derm is a waste of time b/c it's 'just eczema'. I feel like a terrible parent enough as it is, this makes me feel just fucking awful.
No. From what I see, you kick ass as a mom. Don't let this dr make you doubt yourself.

Yeah, I think it's time to push. They say it's "just eczema"? "I'd like an opinion from a specialist on this, due to its persistence and the fact that nothing has worked to treat it and deal with his discomfort."
"But it's just eczema."
"I'd like a second opinion and for you to give me a referral to a skin specialist to make sure there's nothing else we can do."
Repeat firmly and as needed. I don't get the reluctance to give a referral -- I'm pretty sure that a good dermatologist isn't going to dismiss a persistent, uncomfortable skin condition that hasn't responded to treatment, so I don't know why your doctor (who isn't a specialist in the area) is.

cerave. try it derm suggested. May or may not work for you but I'd give it a shot if you haven't. can buy it at target cream in a jar. slather it on at bed time put a sleeper on. I mix it with the rx when I put it on. Miracle for my kid. When there is a bad break out I use it during the day too... usually after a night we are clear. Good luck
I saw that but it sounds like the pedi ordered the testing. I would see a pedi allergist -- they will have a lot more to say and may want to try the scratch test and/or food challenges. Our allergist would never accept that my daughter suffer with her eczema until she "outgrows it."
also an allergist can advise you about giving anti-histamines.
