I lived in a 3rd floor walk up with an infant. It was a pain in the ass but I managed. I always did grocery shopping on weekends when DH could help with the carrying. That being said I wouldn't want to live there forever.
I lived in a third floor apartment. Groceries sucked (no delivery option) as did other shopping like Target, etc. carrying cat litter up 2 flights of stairs- no fun. Also carrying a heavy suitcase when going on vacation sucked.
Plus you get to your car and realize you forgot something you have to go all the way back up the stairs. I seriously celebrated moving out of there. It was the top floor though and in the back so it was usually very quiet and no one above me
Where are you? If you're talking NYC or the boroughs, that's one thing, if you're talking some other markets it could really affect your resale desirability and value.
Queens
Oh I'm going to have to PM you!
I've been on a 3rd floor walk up and it wasn't so bad. I wouldn't want to be higher than that though.
Our last place was on the 3rd floor. When we moved in we were absolutely flat broke and couldn't afford movers. That was beyond painful. Grocery shopping sucked. And if you forgot something, forget it. Unless it was life or death we didn't go back for it or take 2 trips for anything. I don't know why climbing those flights of stairs was so much worse than going up and down in my townhouse now, but it was torture.
Third floor is my limit. On the pro side, it is nice to be further away from the street. I really don't think this would affect your resale at all in queens. Good luck!
3rd floor walk up in Brooklyn, here. 2.5 year old and due Monday w/ #2. I lug my own groceries and laundry.
I actually don't mind it. We have awesome light up here, don't have to deal w/ anyone above us and it's nice and quiet. Assuming you are thinking of having kids, I'd just make sure you're allowed to keep a stroller at the entrance, because that helps considerably.
Thanks. Yes I'm planning for kid(s?) probably only 1 total within the next 2-3 years.

You're welcome. Â Downstair stroller parking is clutch. I assume your mom doesn't live in NYC? Â I hate to play the "If you don't live in NYC, you don't understaaaaand" card, but when it comes to housing, it's kind of true.
We (collective NYCers), put up with a lot of shit that we likely wouldn't if we lived elsewhere (in my case: Â using the laundromat, having no yard, paying $2k/month for 550 sq ft, roomsharing w/ a baby, not having a car, having exactly one closet, I could go on forever). Â 2 years ago, when we lived in a much LerCOL city, I wouldn't have gone for this set up, but living here, it's the best we can afford for our location.
My whole family is born and raised in NYC. My mom grew up in a third floor walk up in Brooklyn. So ha! But seriously I cannot afford a house in an area where I'd want to live, so condo it is and with that comes sacrifice.

I wouldn't do it.
I moved out of a 2nd floor walk up after getting pregnant with my 2nd baby because it would have been impossible. Even with one kid, I was constantly leaving her alone in her crib for a minute so I could run down the stairs and put the stroller outside, etc. Total PITA.
I also spent many years living in a 5th floor walk up pre kids and it was hell. It never got easier.

ETA if you have stroller parking on the main floor then I may consider it. We didn't have that. I'm in NYC.
Just to add to my previous comment, I feel so much safer living on the second floor. I know no one can climb in my windows and there are multiple locked doors an intruder would have to get through to get into my apartment. Plus, we don't have ugly bars on our windows like everyone with garden or parlor level units do.
Oh, well, shit. Just get the groceries delivered. Don't most places do it for free if you spend a certain amount?
Lol yeah I know, but delivery is a PITA because they always fuck it up.
Yeah, and they are terrible at picking out produce!
I don't know. It's definitely doable if you love everything else, just not ideal. I'm probably going to start looking to buy a place in Bay Ridge once my divorce is final, and I don't think I'd consider a 3rd floor walk up. But I'm also super lazy.

Lol. In NYC, it is the law to have barred windows if there is a child under the age of 9 in the residence, so if she has kids, she'll be stuck with bars anyhow.
I lived on a third floor in college and I had a dog. It was fine for one person. Even the dog didn't bother me much. But no way with kids. And I was only buying groceries for myself so it wasn't much. Even moving wasn't that big of a deal because the staircase was wide. My next apartment had a narrow staircase and that was a much bigger pain, even though it was only on the second floor.

We are in a third floor walk up right now and with a baby it is not great, but ok.
The key is laundry. If you have laundry in unit, go for it. If not, keep on steppin, because hauling my laundry up and down to the basement every day is chapping my chicken.
We lived in a 2nd floor walk up when DD was born. It was annoying, but manageable. We were lucky in that our parking was right underneath our unit though, so we just stored the stroller in the car trunk so I never had to lug the stroller up and down the stairs.

Laundry is in the unit. I could not deal with having to lug laundry.
