Once again I have been living under a rock. I had no idea Excel would be preferred for this. I thought Excel is just used for functions, like if the values change depending on content in other cells. The list I'm working with is just a list of 23 people and I don't think it will ever need to "function". I haven't used Excel since I *had* to for college.

I make spreadsheets for everything. I love excel.
The nice thing about excel for even a short list like this is if you realize you need to add some data (like you want to add a column for whether you've contacted that person for a specific event yet) you can just do that, then delete the column when you're done with it in a single click. You can sort the list by various parameters as needed. You can insert people and delete people without farking up the formatting. You can even hide entries without having to delete them if you just want to print a version of your list with the addresses or numbers or some of the people omitted for some reason.

I think it would really help me to have better Excel skills.
I use Word for everything now and I can add/delete rows or columns in a table with no problem whatsoever, but I know I would probably derive a lot of benefit from Excel if I learned it.

yeah, word can do all that- but you know how sometimes it thinks it's smarter than you with the formatting? Like it tries to shove things over to another page or resize your cells for you and other annoying shit that makes your table not pretty anymore? Excel never does that. when I have to insert a table into a word doc I almost always make it look how I want in excel and then just C&P it in rather than fuss with formatting it in Word. column width in particular alwayas pisses me off in word. NO I DON'T WANT YOU TAKE THAT EXTRA WIDTH FROM THE ADJACENT COLUMN YOU SHITASS PROGRAM. I WANT THE WHOLE TABLE TO GET SMALLER!!

I google everything. It has solved many a probems I've run into with Word and Excel and taught me most of what I can do in Photoshop as well as remind me what to do in InDesign and Illustrator.
I get frustrated by coworkers who can't just google it before asking me to stop my work to troubleshoot theirs.
