Kid is in 4T and 5T currently. I'm starting to buy clothes the next size up for summer and fall. I'm so confused. Is the next size up XS/4/5 in kids clothing? Then S/5/6? XS/4/5 IS bigger than 4T/5T, correct?

To be honest I think the 4/5 is the same size, but the cut is different so it seems bigger... that's actually a really good question and I'm not sure of the answer...

I kind of slipped a few 4/5 in ds's clothing rotation to see how they fit him before I tried buying the next size up, I think. Pants were especially hard though. It depends on how your kid is built. The toddler sized pants are roomier in the butt to allow room for a diaper or pull up. so the little boys ones actually seemed smaller. Ds is pretty stocky so I always have to make sure I'm buying loose fitting jeans.

DD can wear 4t and 4 interchangeably. I'm buying 5/6 or a small when I find stuff. If I want her to wear it now and again in the fall I'll buy an xs 4/5.
He currently has a shirt I misread the label on (its a 2T and not a 5T) and he constantly still tries to wear it because "Hero 6! Mommy bought it for me". And a pair of Frozen pjs he decided were too frilly to actually wear but when I mentioned returning them he HIDE THEM FROM ME.
I'd really like to avoid "trying on and returning" anything.

DS refuses to try anything on. My rule of thumb is to buy bigger and if he takes a little while to grow into it, that's one less thing I have to buy later. I have about two storage types filed with clothes that are at least one size too big. If I find a really good deal, I will buy the next size up and one size bigger because DS also gets attached to things. If I have the same thing in the next size up, he gets to wear it longer and usually we avoid tears when something is to small.
If you're going to target, XS (4/5) in the big kid section is bigger than their 4T and 5T.
Toddler sizes are made short and stumpy, to account for slouching and diapers. The big kid sizes are made leaner and longer since by age 4, they're starting to rapidly lose the baby fat, stand up straight, and they don't need the extra butt space for the diaper bulk.
For reference, DS is 48" tall and 50 lbs. He's in size 6/7 (S) at target. At walmart, he's in 7/8 (maybe it's 8/9... Medium, either way) since their clothes run small.
Your best bet is to take a shirt and a pair of pants that fit him to the stores and hold them up to stuff to find slightly bigger.
Side note on kid clothes... WTF is up with the non-functional drawstrings on all of the sweatpants?!
Grrrr.
fake buttons, pockets for infants, fake pockets, the weird "I'm wearing a long sleeve shirt under my short sleeve shirt but not really" shirts, etc.
Kids clothes are weird.
Why didn't I think to just bring a pair of his clothes to compare the sizes to?! Genius.
The only one of those fake clothes things I can get behind is the fake layering. DS is always hot, but he likes different colored long sleeves under his t-shirts sometimes. So I have a few of the fake layered t-shirts for him.
Andplusalso, functional buttons on size 4 jeans... they can't work that shit yet. Velcro or drawstrings people!
The size comparison thing was out of necessity one day. DS needed bigger clothes around age 2, but I wasn't sure what size he needed and I ran out on my lunch break so he wasn't with me. My diaper bag was in the car so I just grabbed the extra outfit from the diaper bag, sized up from what I had, and it worked.
My kid loves buttons. He asks if he can button MY pants when I'm done peeing.
Kid, no. BOUNDARIES.
Hahaha
I put jeans on DS if we go to church. If he goes to the bathroom, he pulls everything back up and stares at the button. Then he looks at me and says "mom, this button is not necessary". As soon as we get home, he strips them off and puts sweatpants on. Can't say I blame him. I do the same thing.

lol. Your kid is much wiser.
Mine likes to sleep in cargo pants. Lots of buttons and pockets cargo pants. He changes out of perfectly good sweat pants or pajama bottoms for cargos. Wut!?

I've never been one to buy a whole year or season ahead because my DD's growth is so unpredictable. I feel like the toddler sizes are a little wider and shorter, and the regular 4/5 is narrower and longer. Both seem to fit my DD right now, so I flip flop between departments. I try and buy her stuff with some room so she won't grow out of them right a way and may be able to wear stuff in the fall that she's now wearing in the spring, but if not it's no big deal. I like to shop! LOL
Also, getting her to try stuff on is a pain! I usually have to bribe her.
