To clarify, I feel like it also is important that all of the group text people know each other. I've been included on group texts where I literally only know the sender but then keep getting responses from unknown numbers.
It's one thing if it's all friends of mine, but otherwise I won't reply all.

Depends on what it is. The last one I got was a friend asking if anyone wanted a couple toys she was getting rid of. I'd reply all to that. I wouldn't reply all to a text cancelling plans.
Group texts are evil. The last thing I want to have to deal with is thirty five texts coming to my phone wishing congratulations or whatever to a third party that has absolutely nothing to do with me.
there is an option to reply only to the sender??? if so, then why don't my sisters use it? I hate group texts because inevitably two people go off on their own tangent and meanwhile, my phone is blowing up.
Thanks. Just trying to see if my annoyance is justified. This week I've encountered this twice - First, it was my friend announcing her baby's birth. I replied congrats just to her, then received a million congrats from all these people I don't know. My phone was going off all day. Today, my brother in law texted that he is going skydiving. He replied to a group text my h sent awhile ago about a family party. The replies from everyone are so funny. I don't think my IL's know that there are other people on this group text, like my parents for example...
Stuff like this is why group texts can go fuck themselves.

I think on iphones, you can't just reply to sender unless you start a new string of texts and you can't opt out. I hate it.

I have a samsung galaxy s3. my mom and sisters all have iphone 5s. typically, I start a new string of texts with the sender unless there is a reason for me to reply all.

I haaate group texts. I always uncheck the group text box unless I'm actually having a conversation with everyone involved. I mostly hate them because once my BFF's aunt kept replying all so I was getting texts that had nothing to do with the original text. Some people don't get it, lol.
How to leave a group iMessage thread on iPhone and iPad Launch the Messages app on your iPhone or iPad running iOS 8 or higher. Tap on the thread you'd like to leave in order to open it. Tap on Details in the top right. Tap on Leave this Conversation — you'll need to scroll down a ways.

I used to be way more pissed with group text a couple of months ago when we didn't have smart phone (or unlimited texting). 1- I would only be able to respond to the sender, so the conversation would be all wonky and 2- I had to freaking pay for all of these text messages from people I didn't know, responding to the sender.

If it's an actual conversation among my friends, I reply all.
If somebody sends a group text with a picture of their new baby to all of the contacts in the phone, I reply just to them and then curse all day when my phone alerts me of another "congratulations!" text from somebody I don't know.
I don't have a texting plan so I get especially testy when I start getting all these random replies that I'm going to have to pay for. Most of the time I will go back to replying directly to the sender so I can get back to a free iMessage text.
I have one group of friends that uses a free texting app to make plans within our group.
