1. Via Chicago. Fly American from LGA (I'd be leaving from home, so let's say a half an hour away) to Chicago, then connect (also American) to TOL. 1:55pm-3:33pm from LGA to ORD; 4:40pm to 6:47pm from ORD to TOL. I have lounge access when I fly AA, FWIW.
2. Via Detroit. Fly Spirit (which is godawful, right? that's the only airline that goes non-stop to Detroit) direct from LGA (which is probably an hour and a half from my office -- I'd leave from my office) to Detroit. Flight time two hours -- depart 4:55p; arrive 6:58 pm. Get rental car in Detroit and drive 45 miles to Toledo. (Note: I will not otherwise need a rental car while in Toledo). [ETA: it seems like there are more options than just Spirit to get to Detroit, so just answer on the itinerary and not the airline, pls!]
Which would you do?
(Also, if anyone knows of other options, I'm all ears!)
Not that I'd vote for option 2 - but why do you have to leave from your office for that choice. Is it because it's almost a full day at the office as opposed to option 1?
Can you be picked up or get a rental in Detroit? Much better than flying in to Toledo (sorry Toledo peeps -considering I'm spending the weekend in Perrysburg!).
If you hate driving, fly in to Toledo. I don't mind Detroit's airport and traffic and driving don't bother me either.

Has to do with the timing of the flight. It is late enough in the day that I'd feel like I should put in a (slightly more than) half day at the office, while the Chicago itinerary is early enough in the day that I definitely wouldn't go in because I'd be there for so little time. My apartment is about halfway between office and LGA.
To answer other questions:
- If I fly to Detroit, I will get a rental car to get to Toledo. There is no-one to pick me up.
- I can't fly direct to Toledo as far as I can tell (by Kayak searches), but if anyone knows of airlines that fly direct from EWR/LGA/JFK to Toledo, please share because that would be the clear winner.
I see direct AA flights from LGA to DTW. It's at least not Spirit. I vote for the connection so you can avoid the rental car. Not driving means you can take advantage of the AA lounge amenities.
I also could not find any direct flight to Toledo from any NYC airport.

I hate flying through ORD, so I'd probably do Detroit on Delta, if possible. That drive between Detroit and Toledo isn't that bad, in my opinion. I feel like everything through ORD always gets fucked, and Delta is better in that regard.
I would fly to Detroit on Delta. It's an easy drive and lots of flights if you run into problems with yours.
I agree with this because I always run into problems with small airports -- with only 2-3 flights a day, there are high chances for delays and cancellations. Most of the small rental car places aren't part of Hertz national or whatever, so you couldn't do a one way rental if needed to get home.
I voted A, but if you can do B on Delta instead of Spirit, that is the way I would go.
I wonder if Toledo has any shuttles between there and the Detroit airport. If so, you could avoid renting a car. My parents live a couple hours away from a major airport, but there are multiple daily shuttles between their town and the major airport. Might be something to look into.

My H has been working outside of Toledo (and traveling there each week). He prefers option B (as long as its a reputable airline), but he also likes driving.

In that case, I'd just arrange car service -- this trip is going to be annoying enough that I wouldn't want to have to deal with shuttle schedules/logistics! As long as it isn't, like, $500 each way, my company wouldn't care.
But at any rate, that's an alternative to renting a car. I kind of forgot that Detroit and Toledo are close enough to each other that car service wouldn't be a ridiculous idea.

Did anyone suggest the train yet?? Take the Lake Shore Limited from NYP to TOL and get a sleeper. Train leaves at 3:40 PM and arrives around 6 AM in Toledo. Dinner and breakfast on the train FTW!
