Ugh. It really is miserable. Hopefully his prescriptions help...the antiviral should really help provided that he starts it within 72 hours of onset. I hope he doesn't have much residual nerve pain after it heals

If you can get into the doctor very early, they can give an antiviral (I think my step mom got acyclovir) and it can shut things down in their tracks. She was *just* starting to break out though.
I have still been trying to figure out if the chicken pox vaccine that I received 5 years ago for my practicum (needed proof of immunization and I had the disease, so just let them vaccinate me) is effective against shingles. It should be, but no one can give me a good answer.
Valtrex will help with alleviating some of the symptoms.
I'm glad you got the shot. I think I need to consider getting one too.
I had been thinking about it, and last night on the way home from work I stopped and got it at the pharmacy. Shingles is not contagious, but you can get chicken pox (if you are not immune) from someone who has active shingles.
Wait, what did you get? I assume the shingles vaccine? Did your pharmacist ask you questions beforehand, or was it okay because you are over the recommended age, or did they not care at all?
I am frequently reminded to get the vaccine by my mom, as soon as I'm 50. But I'm also told to do it asap by my MIL who had a horrendous case of shingles a few years ago. I don't know if they'll give it to me or not, since I'm only 42. My mom says I'd definitely get shingles if I don't get the vaccine (had a severe case of chpx as a toddler).
