My new car doesn't have LATCH in the middle seat, and I'm a little concerned that the install with the belt in the middle just isn't as tight. Do you think it's safer to install on the outside seat with latch? Or us middle still safer? I can get it so it moves <1" as desired, but with the LATCH that sucker doesn't move at all...

I put Lucy on the passenger side bc my car also has no latch in the middle. I felt like it was a trade-off of safeness, and since latch felt more secure, that's what I did.
I'm probably wrong, who knows, this was in the dark ages

A seatbelt install is just as safe as latch, as long as it is done properly, which it sounds like you have done.
My vehicle doesn't have a suggestion for the safest spot for an install, so I've always preferred the boys in the outboard positions, mostly because it is easier for me putting them in and taking them out. This was especially true once we switched from the infant bucket seat and into a convertible.

WE installed in the middle with seat belt, but we have no latch system at all. I technically think middle is the safest option if done correctly, but it isn't like putting a kid on the side is going to result in instant death or anything.
