Dresses are a little less specific, they are by color if they are i regular rotation, dressy ones are in protective covers in a different closet.

Let's see...
Bottom rack: section for jeans, dress pants, shorter skirts, sleeveless tops. All arranged by color. Mixed formality.
Top rack: all seasonal tops (short sleeve Mar-Oct, long sleeve Oct-Mar), all arranged by color. Mixed formality.
Single rack: cardigans, blazers, maxi skirts, arranged by color. And dresses, arranged by formality first, then sleeve, then color. And right now, this rack also includes my entire maternity wardrobe.

Guest room closet: non-seasonal tops, arranged by color. And other special items (wedding dress, special occasion coats, sentimental items from HS and college).

Top rack - sleeveless and short sleeves, all arranged light to dark

Bottom rack - long sleeves, all arranged light to dark. Extra left over space is where skirts go.

Tall rack in the corner - long skirts/dresses

Medium rack - dresses arranged left to right by casual, DVF, nice, vintage

I have dresses, pants, skirts, outside clothes ( long sleeve tees, fleece vests), tops, button down tops and blazers.

Shirts, sweaters, pants, skirts and dresses all divided up and organized by color.

The rack straight ahead in my closet is just for shirts. I group those by sleeve length and then color, rainbowically (totally a word.) So it starts with strapless white and ends with long sleeve black.

To the right of my closet door, I hand everything else. In the back, I hang dresses. Those are also by sleeve length and then color. Then I have my jeans - grouped into colors/patterns and then just plain denim.

In front of the denim is sweaters. I have my sweatshirts and hoodies together, arranged by color. Then I have my cardigans arranged by color. Finally, I have my pullovers, also arranged by color.

Left wall:
Left section:
Top: Long sleeve tops sorted by color
Bottom: short sleeve tops sorted by sleeve length (sleeveless then short sleeve) and then by color. Vests and non-outerwear jackets are on this level also.

Middle section: skirts. Somewhat sorted by color but I haven't organized these as well.

Right section: dresses sorted by sleeve length then color.

Then folded on shelves above these hanging rods are tee shirts and tanks sorted by color.

Right wall:
Pants on hangers, sorted by color.
Jeans on shelves, folded in half just stacked.
On shelves above: sweaters and workout pants.

Shoes: sorted by type then color.

I sort everything by color- hung up tops in one section. Skirts, then pants, then blazers and cardigans in another section, and a separate section for dresses. Jeans, jeggings, and thick sweaters are folded on shelves.

Necklaces are hung (I am using a tie rack for this) and other jewelry is in acrylic jewelry boxes with drawers. I am using a few baskets to keep swimwear and hosiery organized.

I bought a scarf hanger for my scarves.

I am majorly re-doing my closet (almost finished!) so organization is at the front of my mind lately.

I admit the OCD is strong in me. 

I know I don't utilize my closet properly.  But I will also admit that I don't have an extensive wardrobe due to the fact that I wear pajamas scrubs to work.

I have a tall section on the left that has: a tote bag with hats/beanies, followed by my belt hanger, and then dresses. There are top and bottom sections on the right: top is tank top/sleeveless, with going out/dressy shirts on the right side and bottom is tee shirts/long sleeves. Everything is organized by rainbow color.

Dresser in guest room has intimates, jeans, pajama pants and workout clothes.
