Wasn't sure if this was the right board to post this on or not but I know it gets a lot of traffic and lots of people have kids so I figured why not. We are debating getting a tablet for A for Easter, but are hoping for something that isn't to expensive, works good and is easy to use. Right now I am looking at the 8 in Nabi Dream Tab and the 6 inch amazon fire kids edition. I've actually never had a tablet before so don't know much about them so I would love some recommendations. Thanks
ETA: A is currently 4 years old, not turning 5 until fall. Figured age range might be a factor in type of tablet etc.
My 3 yr old has the Nabi Jr and she loves it. It has educational and fun apps, easy to use, parent setting (I can even access the internet And netflix, etc), durable

I agree with Jezebel. The fire with free time is great. My four year old loves it. I would go for more memory as well, as I seem to have to remove content from my son's profile to keep him from filling it up. It can change as he grows so I think that has advantages over a kid's tablet. I like using it as well.
My dd got an iPad mini for Christmas and she loves it. I loaded it with learning apps and things like Disney jr and Hulu. Then I locked it so that she couldn't download apps, make in-app purchases or use safari to go online, not that she would because she only turned 2 in December. She is able to do everything on there herself. It's easy to use. And it will grow with her. As she gets older I'll just delete baby apps and download preschool or kindergarten apps.

My DS (same age - will be 5 in the fall also) had a Nabi tablet for awhile and loved it... Until he accidentally stepped on the screen and broke it. I had the same debate as you when it came down to buying him a new one because there are SO MANY options available now. What I ended up doing was buying a used older iPad (2nd generation) for around the same price. He loves it. If you're considering it you can find them pretty cheap ($100 or less) on FB garage sale sites, Craigslist, and eBay.

My kids are 9 and 7 and they both got a 6" Kindle Fire last Christmas. We really like them. There are lots of books available from our local library and the parental controls are fantastic (Kindle FreeTime app). We set it to turn off between 8pm and 8am. They have to read for 45 minutes before any apps unlock and are limited on the amount of screen time they can have in one day (it turns off after 2 hours).
However, if iPad minis had been in our budget we would have gotten those instead. The Fires are nice, but the iPads, in my opinion, are better.
