DS is obsessed lately with cooking, loves to play with his friend's kitchen sets and help me out in the kitchen. We were thinking of getting him a play kitchen as a present from baby sister in June when she arrives. We aren't looking for something huge and expensive, something with a small footprint that will fit in the corner in our dining room.
We have the Hape creative cookery. I got it for well under $100 as a lightning deal on Amazon. It comes with play food and dishes. DS loves chopping the carrot and slicing the bread.
I love it because it's small and simply designed. You can also buy a fridge to match later if you want to expand. My second choice is the ikea kitchen but I knew I'd want to hack it and take a million years to finish.
I really loved the kid craft uptown(?) and retro kitchens, but we ended up going with the Ikea one because I was too indecisive and waited too long to get the other ones for Christmas.
I will say that while I like the Ikea one just fine, it has no fridge, which cuts down on the amount of crap you can cram into it.
We have the Hape one that litasail, @republicrat, and winecheery posted. It's nice and compact, seems well-made, and it was easy to put together. My only concern would be if your DS is really tall for his age, since it's pretty low to the ground.
We bought the Melissa & Doug wooden food to go with it and I would recommend going with plastic food instead. It really hurts when you get beaned with a wooden orange!
