That definitely sounds like anxiety, if I get really anxious I have similar symptoms. I can not deal with closed in spaces and depending on how tight the space is, my heart starts to race, and I have trouble breathing. Full blown anxiety attacks for me felt like how they describe heart attacks, minus the pain radiating down the arms. Before I got medication to help me deal with them, they were horrible and I swore I was dying each time I had one.
My panic attacks feel like I am trapped in my own skin and all I want to do is rip my skin off and run as far away as possible. I also feel light headed and extremely dizzy. Thankfully they don't last too long, but I've noticed that I'm getting them a lot more lately.

Unfortunately, I've had panic attacks since I was a kid. Usually they are shorter, but I can clearly remember one that lasted hours before. It was absolutely awful and only ended when I had a lot of drugs to knock me out for the night.
I'm sorry you had to deal with one like that. Do you usually have issues with enclosed spaces?
The only time I get claustrophobic is mid-panic attack. I'm not normally like that, but when my fight or flight system kicks in it feels like everything closes in on me in that moment. My very first attack was hours long, because I didn't know that's what it was and I was alone. It was several hours long and I truly thought I was dying (but yet too stubborn to ask for help or go to the doctor). It came out of nowhere.
Now that I know I'm not dying and its anxiety, I've learned how to calm myself down so I typically keep my attacks to just a few minutes. But they still suck and feel like forever in that moment.
I don't know if this sounds weird, but the first thing I thought of is that there was a ventilation issue with your tent, and maybe there was a CO or CO2 buildup, and maybe the symptoms were more obvious if you were lying down??
ETA: jane6672 Doing a bit of googling seems to suggest CO2 poisoning is a possibility.
