We have a Family Video. They will send us free rental coupons when it's been a while since we have rented. They also offer monthly plans where you can pay $10 to get half price rentals all month. H uses this when there's a new video game released since it's cheaper than buying a brand new game.
Oh, and H's hometown has a small locally owned rental place. Cash only, but a large selection of older stuff. Not sure how they stay in business, but they even let you choose if you pay now or upon return.

Nope.
Now I'm feeling all nostalgic about blockbuster. Somehow walking around blockbuster for an hour trying to pick a movie > browsing Netflix for an hour trying to decide what to watch.

We loved the Family Video near where we used to live. Cheaper than Redbox, movies earlier than Redbox, a get one free (any non-new release) with any rental, and kids movies were free (actually good movies like Disney).
I just looked it up and we do have ONE. And yelp reminded me of the "18 and over only" section that they have in the back of video stores! Lol. I remember lingering near that section in middle school and trying to sneak a peak.

Family Video is still going strong around here too. I don't know what their secret is, it's so weird that all the others have closed and they still manage to operate at least 3 stores that I can think of in about a 3 mile radius.
It's one of our main stores. All we have here is a grocery store, hardware store, McDonalds and Blockbuster. Everything else is 25 mins away. I never in a million years thought I'd live in a small town like this.
Not in my town, but I think there is one left in the next town over. All the stores seemed to have closed in the last few years. We do have redbox everywhere.
In our county all the libraries are one library with 6 branches. We have DVDs for rent. And they are free with a library card just like a book. They rent for 7 days. We have an awesome collection. People donate constantly! So brand new movies can be free to borrow if it's donated, and they always are. Our Friends of the Library groups purchase new releases too and those are available to borrow for 3 days for $1. Patrons love it!
The grocery store near me has a small video rental selection.
The Blockbuster closed probably 5 years ago and is either a bank or a yoga studio now. The other local non-chain place closed before that and is now a Zumba studio.
Oh...and you remember getting all excited that a video was in stock only it turned out to be beta only?
I feel really old
When we got our first VCR when I was a wee lass, we had to rent our videos at the furniture/electronic store where my parents bought it (for $700!!) because that's the only place that had tapes for rent.
They had a white tag for VHS and a yellow tag for Beta, and I remember being disappointed every damn time because there was always this one movie I wanted it and it was only Beta.
Not in my town, but there is one in my hometown. It operates like a redbox, as I understand it, and you're charged by the day. Apparently it's still doing ok, and hanging in there.

I am too old for betas, but I do remember the excitement when you got the LAST copy of whatever new release you were hoping for. I remember going w/ my friends when we were spending the night at whoever's house, piling in the car, having a mom drive us, and practically running to the back wall of the store. Then, if the last copy of League of Their Own, or Now and Then was there? Oh yes, you pretty much ruled the world at that point, and it was most definitely going the be the Best Sleepover Ever.
I just saw the South Park where Stan Marsh paid $10,000 for a Blockbuster, thinking he got the steal of the century. He went The Shining and it was quite funny.
Same episode: These thugs go around robbing Red Box, thinking they'll hit pay dirt but they bust it open and there's like a few bucks.
Family Video opened up a few years ago when two or three other video stores closed. We actually went there yesterday to pick out three movie(two new releases and one free kid's movie) for one dollar total. I have no idea how they stay in business!
The one we used to go to is still open and there seems to always be people in there but it does have a large array of drinks and snacks and serves as a local convenience store too.
I do miss rainy Sundays when we'd come home with 3 for the price of 2 and lots of cookies and M&Ms. It's not the same looking online
Yes. One near my boyfriend's place and we go there about 1-2 times a month. It's usually fairly busy. It also has a great selection. There's another one we drive by often, but I've never been in there.
I live in a small town and after Blockbuster closed, a small independent store opened. I've never been in there but its been around for a few years now.
