I'm going on a cruise in May that island-hops in the Caribbean. We'll be doing a decent amount of walking each day checking out the islands, so though I'm usually good with sturdier flip flops for a day at the zoo or the like, I think I need to look for something heavier-duty. Any recommendations?

Lurker here, but I take my Orthaheel Tide flip flops on all my trips. I've worn them on cruises and through Europe. They are designed to be super supportive of your feet and knees. On my last trip I also took a pair of Merrell Azura's which were very comfortable and didn't require breaking in.

I love my croc sandals. I know, I know. But I don't think they're hideous. They're similar to this: www.crocs.com/crocs-patricia/10386,default,pd.html?cid=41U
Well, sometimes "not hideous" is in the eye of the beholder....
I have a pair of Birkenstocks Gizeh that I LURVE. Wore them to a standing room only b-ball game last summer and I had no back pain at all. It was marvelous. This is my first pair of Birkenstocks and I now understand why people love them.

I also have the Birkenstock Gizehs and I think they work pretty well. I wore them in Italy which included a lot of walking. I broke them in before leaving and despite doing so, I still got a blister in the middle of my toe where the thong goes so I'd be mindful of that.
Which seem hideous, but actually look okay on, are VERY comfortable walking and for a beach vacation are perfect because you can do a lot of water type activities and then go right to walking around town in them. I got mine for a vacation in Belize last year where I was basically wearing shorts and either walking around the beach or hiking around jungles the entire time and they worked out really well. The blue goes with a lot of stuff.
I also love my Birkenstocks for all day on my feet! But I agree with PP that they take some time to break in. And for me, certain styles never break in comfortably. The ones that do work well with my feet are amazing, though.
Mine aren't exactly those pairs, but are that style. I was surprised at how often I wear them back home in the summer months. I think H's might be Keens, but I know Merrell and Keens are both reputable brands.

You'll probably think they're hideous lol, but I am a Chacos proselytizer. They're amazing. I could walk all day in them. Mine are the Z1s and all black so they're not ridiculous looking.
I have some sandals from Born that are only slightly hideous. They're really so comfortable though, just like sneakers. I've walked hours and hours and hours on end in them.

I had a pretty decent pair of black ones that were sturdy-stupid me broke a strap last year because I was lazy and sticking my foot in without unbuckling it first. I need another pair.
I also recommend Born. They have a few styles that are supportive but not obvious about it - as in, you won't look like you're wearing orthopedic sandals or anything.
I really like my Birks. I have the following two pairs. I even wear them around the house since my old lady feet hurt without some arch support. I also love the Sanuk's mentioned.

I really like Keens. I have access to them at a wholesale price through work. Their sneakers and slip ons are seriously the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn, and they have some decent flip styles too.
If you can't do regular flip-flops, just give up and go full ugly.
There's no point in half-assing it with something that's kind of ugly.
This is where I'm at. I wear flip flops to go from my pedicure, or to wear to the beach or pool. However, I can't walk any distance in them - regardless of how comfortable (and I have a really comfortable pair of Clark's that I should be able to wear).
I have these too, and love them for beaches that are rocky, or have sharp dune grass. I have the feel and ease of being barefoot, yet a layer of protection so my feet don't get hurt.
