do dogs get stomach bugs like people? Because Ellie woke up puking this morning in her crate, but then we went for a walk and she seemed like her normal perky self. regular poop even.
I gave her some breakfast, but only about 1/3 of what I usually do, she ate it, and now is curled up in her bed (she woke up about 1.5 hours earlier than normal today) with some questionable noises coming from her belly. BUT, if I get up and walk across the room, she still prances right along next to me.
So do dogs get stomach viruses, or sometimes just randomly puke like cats do? Or both? I don't think she got into anything, because she's glued to my side all day, and doesn't go outside unattended. She sleeps in her crate, so couldn't have found anything at night while we were sleeping.
thanks! I know I'm a one trick pony/puppy these days. It's like having a new baby!
If she puked up just yellowish stuff, it could be that she has reflux.
ok, this is what it was, so fingers crossed that's what it is. But she hasn't puked before in the 2 weeks we've had her, and my cat will just randomly puke once and then be done, so I didn't know. I feel like I need a Dog Ownership 411 book, like my Baby 411 book!
Rox sometimes pukes up the yellow bile stuff if it's been too long since she's eaten last. (We feed her regularly but sometimes if we all sleep in later the next day, it's longer than it usually is).
Or, like others said, maybe she got into something. They are little ninjas, these dogs. I will turn my back for a second outside and Rox will inhale some grass or a flower or something and then be puking it up a little bit later.
If your dog is acting normally otherwise, and the vomit doesn't have blood in it (it will look like she's vomiting coffee grounds) then I would just say it's a fluke. If she gets the runs, poops blood, vomits, acts lethargic, or stops eating, then I'd worry.
(Ask me how I know.... no, dont, it still makes me want to cry, though my dog is fine now)
Yes, my guy will randomly puke up the yellowish foamy liquid stuff. The vet said its just reflux. He never seems bothered by it and merrily goes on his way.
He has a super sensitive stomach though and we cannot give him any table food, treats, or change his food. If we do, the poor guy has terrible diarrhea and puking
Yeah, occasional random throwups are relatively normal. Dogs can throw up bile if they haven't had food in a long time. We give a couple biscuits right before bed to head this off. But she could have also gotten into something that didn't agree with her. Even just licking the wrong thing could have done it.
But don't give her regular food right after she throws up. The noises were most likely because her stomach was still a little unsettled. Give her something more gentle, like boiled chicken and plain white rice with no butter or salt, for one meal, then half chicken and rice and half dog food for the next, and if she's back to normal you can go back to all dog food.
