We have GE profile stackable front loaders. They both have the steam feature, but that wasn't all that attractive to us, it just happened to have them. I love the features and have had no problems.
Whichever style you get, just make sure that you measure where you want them to go and make sure that they work! I got my (Maytag Bravos top loader) because someone couldn't fit it into their laundry room and had to return it. So I got essentially a new set for about 1/3 off due to someone else's inattention to detail.
My set it about 5 years old now and still going strong. However, I don't think that I'll get 20 years out of this set that I did my other ones.
About what you want to do, check out Consumer Reports, and once you have it narrowed down to a few models, go onto the website (Best Buy) and read the reviews of what some think of their new washers. One of the models I was just about ready to buy, I stopped in my tracks after I read reviews that there were huge issues with the water sensor and person after person had the same problem.
I do not know what to recommend, but I do know what to stay away from. Do NOT buy Whirlpool Duet front loader washing machine nor the dryer with steam feature. After 1 year the washer had to be totally rebuilt (new drumb etc - was noisy and moldy - and yes, I had wiped the machine and left door open after every use) I eventually turned the water to the steam feature on the dryer off - it was soaking the clothes - I mean dripping wet. After dealing with a ton of phone calls before getting the washer fix, I was not going to go thru that again with the dryer and just decided to use it without the steam feature.
He absolutely loves them. We did have to do some electrical maneuvering (he and my dad did it) to get the dryer to fit and they just barely fit in our laundry closet in the hallway.
Make sure you measure before you buy and include where the hoses and pipes will run behind the machine!!

This. We have had so many problems with our whirlpool duets. At 3 years old, the repair of the current problem costs more than replacing the whole damn washer. I will never buy a Whirlpool again.

I loved my Duet washer! I didn't have a single problem with it, the only reason it's not being used now is because when I moved in with DH, he already had a set, so mine has been in storage for 7 years. Every time I point out how my washer is better than his, he says he doesn't want to switch them out because then the washer and dryer wouldn't match (mine are white, his are black). DH's set is the Whirlpool Cabrio, and I know some here love them, but I'm convinced my washer is better (I didn't get a new dryer when I replaced the washer, so I'm not talking about that).

How long did you use them before putting it in storage? I honestly have to wonder if that's why you aren't having any issues - because you aren't using it.

One thing that you really need to consider is that regardless of how much people here like their washer and dryer, they are not the same models that are available today. They may be better, they may be worse and you really don't know.
My suggestion would be to determine what kind you want (front or top loading), research it first and then go out shopping. My Maytag Bravos got a good review back in 2010, when I bought it. However, it may or may not get the same reviews today, I don't know as I haven't looked back since I bought it.

I go cheaper. I have pretty much the low end, but not the lowest at both our main house and our vacation house.
I have a model like this one at our regular house. The others are all older, but in a similar vein. I don't get spending $1500-$2000 on a washing machine and dryer. It's not like they fold the clothes and put them away.

I've been happy with our Bosch (front loader). It's several years old, but it has a ton of wash cycles. I can do woolens and silks and handwashing in it. It's saved a ton on dry cleaning.
