I'm home sick (again...ugh) and finished Scandal on Netflix so decided to restart Downton Abbey at Season 1, episode 1. So many things get set up here! But to the point:
I wonder if a large portion of the animosity between Mary and Edith really started here, when Patrick died in the Titanic sinking. Mary isn't very sad even though they were engaged, but Edith is muh sadder. Of course I don't know if Edith really loved him or is just generally mopy, but if she did love him this could be cause for significant resentment.
Edith did love him. She was hoping that he'd choose her to marry, but he proposed to Mary instead. Edith sucked it up and was happy for them, but when Mary was all. "oh that sucks *yawn*" about him dying on the Titanic, Edith cracked.
I don't know if the back story came up later in season one or in the WW II season where the con man from Canada pretended to be him.
But yeah Edith was in love with him, but Mary "won".
This first paragraph is what I was thinking (Stan) but you said it better. I'd forgotten that we learn more in a later episode.
Oh but on a happier note I melted just a bit* at the conversation between Carsten and Mrs Hughes where they're asking each other if they're happy with their life choices or if they wish they'd pursued families of their own.
I am so going to re-watch Downton from the VERY START before the last season airs! And, I agree with you re: Mary & Edith - they seem like sisters who were never really close (remember later how Mary points out that Sybil kept them civil) and then the whole thing with Patrick just seems like the straw that broke the Edith's back re: Mary.
...We should do a book club kind of thing watching from the beginning...an episode a week until the season starts or something like that....so we can talk about it again. ...

Yes this, exactly.
I had a hard time liking Mary from the very first episode where she was all *yawn* about her fiance dying on the Titanic. She is so, so cold.

I'm pretty sure PBS replays the whole series in the fall before the new season starts in January. I'm 99% sure I've watched the previous seasons before the new one for the past two years just because my DVR records them for me.
I LOVE re-watching the first few episodes. The lack of technology in the first season blows me away. Candles? No electricity in the kitchen? Etc. Amazing!
I'll join at either 1 or 2 episodes/week. I agree that binging each season isn't going to allow us the opportunity to discuss the finer details.
Maybe target Mondays? That seemed to work just fine for the new episodes. Even those of us who couldn't watch until Monday night (so discussed on Tuesday) still had a good interchange.
