I'm assuming absolutely everything I read online today is bullshit, which means I am interpreting a lot of actual bad news as not being real. It's a refreshing perspective, frankly.
Holy shit Lucy Honeychurch, I would run SCREAMING out of that office.
Has anyone stayed in an apartment/condo vs. a hotel when traveling? I'm looking at apartments vs. hotels when we go to Germany, but I've never done it before and am wondering about pros/cons.

I have rented apartments in the US and in Prague. I absolutely love it. If I am staying in one city for more than a few days it is always my first. It's also usually cheaper, depending on the city.
I have used AirBnB, Homeaway, and VRBO. I prefer AirBnB simply because their search interface is so much better than the others.

What is AirBnB? Do you stay in someone else's house? Is that weird?

www.airbnb.com/ It's huge in Europe and would definitely be great for a Germany trip.
You can filter by only private apartments, which is what I have always done. Some places are people's primary homes but usually it's an apartment they own just to rent out. They have shared room options but there's no way I am doing that. A few more traditional bed and breakfasts list on there and you can find them under private room but I want all my own space. The search comes up as a map view so you can decide what area you want to stay in and go from there.
Generally you meet the owner at the apartment or somewhere nearby to get the keys. They are really great for providing info about the area. A few places have automated lock boxes and you will get a code.
I love having room to spread out, access to a fridge, and multiple rooms. I also try to get a place with some sort of balcony or deck. The neighborhoods are usually more relaxed and residential rather than overpriced and touristy but you can find that if it's your thing.
I spend an unhealthy amount of time on that site just daydreaming about future trips so I am happy to help you find places.
Thinkgeek will occasionally make the April 1 items if they get enough votes to keep them. A few years ago they started selling the Tauntaun sleeping bag after getting enough interest:
