GRAND RAPIDS – An admission by Steven Carl Day that he molested a young relative and was molesting other girls triggered an early morning attack by the man now charged with his Dec. 18, 2013, murder, according to testimony today.
Day, 54, made the revelation while visiting the apartment of Roger Musick and Robert Mccombs after the trio met at a nearby bar. The roommates had been drinking all day to celebrate Mccombs' birthday when the verbal bombshell was dropped.
"Day said he thought one of the girls was starting to like it," Mccombs testified. "My jaw just dropped that he would just admit it, blurt it out like that. I looked over at Roger and he was just as shocked as I was."
Musick, 39, mouthed the words " 'I want to kill him,' " Mccombs told the court.
What happened immediately afterward is a bit fuzzy. Mccombs said he apparently passed out. When he came to, his roommate had Day in a choke-hold on the floor, Mccombs said.

"When I saw him in the choke-hold, his arms were down, his eyes were bulging. He wasn't moving," Mccombs told the court.
An autopsy showed Day died from strangulation; bruises were found on Day's face and body and he had three broken ribs.
The roommates loaded Day's body into the back of Mccombs' Chevy Astro van and headed north, turning onto a gravel stretch of 16 Mile Road east of Myers Lake Avenue NE where they placed the body on a ridge and quickly left.
After having breakfast in Eastown, Musick headed to work and Mccombs tidied up at home. He dumped Day's backpack and coat in the trash bin at a nearby shopping district and peddled the victim's black mountain bike to an abandoned car wash near their home, according to testimony.
Kent County detectives found Day's cellphone in the apartment and his ball cap in Mccomb's van. He and Musick were charged with murder, but within days, charges were dropped.
Mccombs took a train to Tennessee to "clear my head," he testified. He was arrested in Lansing on a return bus trip home.
He was released from the Kent County Jail in early March after being locked up for more than a year on charges of tampering with evidence. The same fate awaited Musick until prosecutors charged him with Day's slaying.
Grand Rapids District Judge Jeanine Laville ruled there was enough evidence to have Musick stand trial for murder. He was returned to the Kent County Jail without bond.

I realize we don't give the death penalty for child molesters, but after I saw he said he thought one of the girls was starting to like it, I wasn't that mad that he was strangled.

Is there evidence that he was actually molesting anyone, or is that just what the guys who killed him told the police?
Seriously. I get the whole "he should get a medal" thing, I do. But I am gonna need to see some substantiation here before I go saying that. I gotta say I am surprised that in this board not too many people raised that flag yet.
Yeah I'm going to need some evidence of what he did before I celebrate his death. That would be quite a convenient story to tell police as a way to lessen any murder charge.
Yeah, I can't celebrate vigilante justice, especially when there was no attempt to allow actual justice to take place. If they contacted the cops and nothing was done and he continued in the behavior, okay, still wrong, but more understandable.
But with no evidence and no attempt to allow justice to occur, these guys committed murder.
"Kent County Sheriff's Detective Martin Albert said he found evidence at Day's home after the 2013 murder that suggested he he had admitted to molesting a five-year-old relative, 35 years ago.
At the time of his death, Day had never been charged or prosecuted for any molestation crime.
Though, Day was taking part in the Salvation Army's 12-step 'Turning Point' program during which Day confessed in a letter to the molestation."

Even if it turns out there was evidence, two things stick out to me. One, they didn't know one way or another if there was evidence. Two, killing's too quick for him if it was true. He deserved to rot in prison.
