Keep reading you want to experience this story as DG wrote it keep reading and be glad you for have to wait 5ish years for herself to finish the next book. Remember she spent her childhood and youth in camps with her Uncle and the last 5ish years in military camps while 1740s Scotland takes it up a notch she is somewhat used to roughing it and dirt. As for the conceiving thing remember her and frank and her not being pregnant during the intro?
I can't believe they still think she's a witch. Collum and Dougal are super smart and super dumb at the same time.
ETA: I still haven't gotten this Scottish crap down. Logahair (whatevs) is having Dugal's kid and now they want to send her off? I think I'm reading too fast.
As an FYI, Laoghaire is pronounced Leeree. I had no idea for the longest time and kept pronouncing it wrong in m head. The book can get confusing at times, so you aren't alone in that. I'm on book 6 at the moment.
I think she doesn't seem scared simply because she is/was a war-nurse so in a way she has been "hardened".
It makes sense though to think she is a witch, since the belief in witches and fairies are very prevalent. She is not the typical female of the time and knows more than she should. Then again, she was rather modern for the 1940s too, so it's even more so now.
I don't understand Claire right now. Why isn't she more scared? I understand that she was a war nurse and blah blah blah, but she was so accepting and has really only seriously tried to get back to the rock twice. At the same time, who in the heck can she tell?! Also, I wonder how crazy her hair really is right now. And how dirty everything is. Sometimes she talks about the dirt and ash and I wonder how 1940s Claire deals with 1700s dirt.
Jamie is just as confusing. So many secrets. He's so strong willed and then turns around and acts like a teenager.
I have to wonder what Frank is thinking. How has time passed? Will Claire eventually stop trying to go back?
They've been married a month and sexing like rabbits. She's going to get pregnant right? How is she not pregnant. Did I glaze over something in the beginning of the book about her not being able to concieve?
I know there are 8 books. If she gets back to Frank, what happens to Jamie, what if she's made an entire life and had babies and then is suddenly back in the 1940s. I have so many questions. I CANT STOP READING.
Why isn't she more scared? She WAS a war nurse, in combat recently and growing up as a child she lived with her uncle who dig archaeological digs. She has never had an easy or normal life - remember her talking about wanting to buy that vase to put in a house and feel normal? That is the thing about Claire - she is very unusual in that she can totally handle this time period - buts she does talk about wanting a hot bath. They address the getting used to smells and what not throughout the series, especially in sex.
has really only seriously tried to get back to the rock twice. Yes - Think about it realistically - she can't just run away. Not only would the Mackenzies capture her and then she would not have an ally in the world - but the redcoats are also looking for her. She needs to focus on staying alive first and foremost. She is also developing feelings for Jamie. I know these feelings are confusing - but remember that her and Frank have not lived together for years - they were practically strangers when they met back at that hotel after the war, and if you do a re-read you will pick up on parts of the conversation where Frank eluded to transgressions during their time apart. It was a loving marriage - but not strong.
At the same time, who in the heck can she tell? No one really - although more is about to come out about this. Keep reading.
Also, I wonder how crazy her hair really is right now. And how dirty everything is. Sometimes she talks about the dirt and ash and I wonder how 1940s Claire deals with 1700s dirt. Her hair is crazy - the show also does a good job of portraying this - it gets bigger as time goes on. She complains about the dirt and grime, but she was no stranger to that living in a battle field for years. Claire is a fighter and smart. She also knows a great deal about history. That way of life is not completely foreign to her as it would be you and I. I loved hearing about the way they bathed/slept/what they ate. Fascinating. Also, they have been on the road for awhile, but most of her tims up until now was spent in the castle - not exactly sleeping on the ground. This however is not a theme throughout the book. LOL.
Jamie is just as confusing. So many secrets. He's so strong willed and then turns around and acts like a teenager. Yes, he is still very young and really this book shows him becoming a man. The thing about Jamie is that he is a very stubborn but honorable person. He feels strongly about right from wrong. he doesn't have THAT many secrets. Really just one big one - and he confesses it. Keep reading.
I have to wonder what Frank is thinking. How has time passed? Will Claire eventually stop trying to go back? Time is passing the same on the other side - day by day. Keep reading. All of this is answered in book and and two.
They've been married a month and sexing like rabbits. She's going to get pregnant right? How is she not pregnant. Did I glaze over something in the beginning of the book about her not being able to concieve?I think you glazed over that - it was mentioned in her inner dialogue when she is with Jamie and also when she was with frank - yes she had troubles conceiving in the past.
I know there are 8 books. If she gets back to Frank, what happens to Jamie, what if she's made an entire life and had babies and then is suddenly back in the 1940s. I have so many questions. I CANT STOP READING. In due time it will all be made clear. You have about 8000 more pages of this story to go. Like @poohbear and I said - you will fly through the first few and then taper off a little. It is a marathon - not a sprint. But I really reccomend getting through the first few as fast as possible
OMG there is so much more I want to say but I think I kept any spoilers out of this post
@professorartnerd
While book 1 has a wonderful love story, and Claire and Jamie are always the main characters, the story unfolds to so much more. There are a lot of jokes about Outlander being some harlequin romance, and the first book does read kind of like one. But the story is way way way more involved.

Not Laoghaire - Geillis is pregnant with Dougals child. They will not burn her while pregnant. This is important. Don't miss this stuff!

Well, it was the 1700's. So being a witch was the only explanation. Even Jamie believes in witches - and to be honest - she TRAVELED THROUGH THE STONES. There is some element of magic in the Scottishhighlands in this book.
With EVERYTHING in this book - thinking in context is key.
Rules of the time when you hear a married couple getting busy you play deaf and dumb and go on your merry way
This too.
If people were lucky they had a one room shack as a forever home. Hearing people have sex is common. Claire had a hard time getting used to this but it is very true to that time period.
Okay, Jamie just left on the hunt with the Duke. I cant believe how nonchalant they are about the Duke liking pretty boys. WTF? I thought this would be bigger deal during this time period than it is. I guess they all just joke about it and then keep it quiet because he's a higher class than they are?
I really like Geillis, but she is so creepy. The whole water/hypnotizing thing was crazy. I'm starting to get Claire. She just went with the flow when I would have been FREAKING THE FUCK OUT over the fact that I just told a crazy lady stuff and couldn't help it.
Geillis totally poisoned her H right? Now is Dugal going to be forced to marry her? OMG!? To Geillis somehow poison Dugal's wife?! Dont tell me. I'm going to keep on reading.
Keep reading. All of that gets more involved.
Lots of people in power like young boys and girls and it stays hush. It happens even today. I am sure it was even more common back then to keep it quiet. Again - context. Diana writes about all aspects of life - the good and bad. Lots of bad stuff happens. And lots of good stuff happens. Keep reading

This is a case of the men in power making the rules. As long as you were powerful enough you were fine, just like today. If your average man in the village was Gay the response would be different.

No, witches weren't really a thing in the 18th century in Scotland. 100 years before maybe, but it's pretty late for that to be happening. Not very historically accurate, but it's part of the story, so just go with it.

Well it would be more of an explanation than say.... in 2015

The last documented witch trial in Scotland was in 1721 so 20+ yrs later is pushing it in historical reality but it's one of those suspend disbelief moments since it's not that far out of the realm of possibility.

Soooooo more of an explanation than in 2015, no? LOL.
We're at the house and he's teaching his nephew to pee. I feel like my blood pressure finally went down now. lol
I've lost track of how many times I've had to step away from the book just to calm down. Books 1-3 were read quickly. Then I took a break (ended up being a few years) before reading book 4.
Did Black Jack father son before he was trampled? If he didn't, by the laws of time travel (lol), Frank blipped out of existence right? How has she not realized this yet? I love the French monk. Love him. I can't decide who I'm picturing him as? In his 30s... Adrian Brody? I know he's not French, but he would make a thoughtful monk that would call you mon chere right?

I have a bad feeling about this little bebe, but just the fact that there's a baby makes me so fucking happy I could scream. I'm pretty sure my snoring husband next to me would throttle me accidentally if I woke him up with a squee though.
Should I start a book 2 brain dump thread, or keep on going here?
