Hello, I am trying to look for information on the Schengen Visa and I have been looking online but no luck. How many months prior to traveling should I request the visa?
What is your nationality? Where are you going and for how long?
ETA: If you're an American going for a short holiday it isn't something you need to worry about. If you are moving, taking an extended trip, and/or you have a passport that requires a visa to enter Europe even for a short visit the answer is dependent on the specific destination.
If you need a visa, it will be handled by either the first Schengen country you enter or the one where you plan to spend the most time. Your best bet is to do a Google search for the embassy of the relevant country, and look at the visa information on the embassy website. It should help you determine whether you need to apply for a visa, what kind you would need, and how to apply for it.
ETA - If you do require a Schengen visa and you plan to visit more than one country in the Schengen area (even if it's just passing through the airport on a layover), be absolutely sure you get an appropriate visa. Even though there are no border checks, there are still single-country Schengen visas that do not allow you to legally enter other Schengen countries. For example, my XH's first Schengen visa was "Norway +1 transit" which allowed him to fly through Denmark on his way to Norway, but did not allow him to cross the border into another country.
