Anyone have any hotel recommendations in San Diego? Ideally under $400/night. We will be traveling with a 4 month old and I'm breastfeeding...so we'll probably do some sightseeing but we may prefer to just relax by the pool as well. Thanks!

If you just want to relax and want someplace quiet I would look into staying in Coastal North County.
La Costa Resort or the Park Hyatt Aviara (used to be the Four Seasons). Both are very nice resorts located about 30 miles north of downtown San Diego. They are in residential areas so you wont have the same noise you would find in downtown.
There are also some nice resorts in the Torrey Pines/La Jolla/Del Mar area. The Lodge at Torrey Pines and La Estancia are very nice. La Valencia would be a good choice if you want to be within walking distance of restaurants and the coast; there are a ton of restaurants on Prospect Ave and you can walk to La Jolla Cove and check out the wildlife.
What do you want to do and see in San Diego? Will you have a rental car?
What part of SD do you want to be in? Do you want a place with free breakfast? Kitchenette?
Not entirely sure...we only need it for 1-3 night right now as we're staying elsewhere with friends for the latter part of the trip. But I'd definitely like a mini fridge b/c I'm going to be pumping while we're there, but don't need a full kitchenette.

I've heard good things about La Valencia...would I need a car to get there? Or could we just cab from the airport?
I haven't done a ton of research as to what we'll want to see...we're going for a wedding for part of the time we're away, but we'll probably at least hit up the zoo. Do you think a rental is necessary or can we use cabs/public transportation to get around?

San Diego is huge. You need a car. Our public transportation is pretty dismal and cabs are expensive. Is the wedding in San Diego? If so do you know where it is?
A cab will run you about $50 to get from the airport to La Jolla with no traffic; if there is traffic you can add another $10-$30 onto that price. I live 30 miles north of the airport and cab fare runs over $100 one way to the airport. I can get a private town car for $90!

I completely agree with alleinesein about the rental car - with one exception. If you stay downtown, you could probably avoid dealing with a rental car. But you'll be limited in what you can see/do. You'll be able to get to the zoo and museums in Balboa Park, Seaport Village, and/or the ferry over to Coronado. However, the "pool scene" isn't going to be as easy to get downtown.
