I have my mid-year review tomorrow and plan on bringing up a promotion tomorrow. In all honesty I'm struggling with the wording I might use to talk about this.
Here's the back story... I am a level 1 manager, and my feedback up to this point is that I'm ready to be promoted to level 2 manager. I was informed a week ago that my manager (a level 2 manager) is leaving the company, and that I'm back-filling him immediately. But as my director was telling me this, he did NOT mention a promotion along with this change. And frankly I was doing a lot of mental processing with this news and didn't think to ask about it in the moment. I am taking on 2 direct reports, and assuming ALL responsibilities of the level 2 manager while not offloading my current responsibilities (for the time being). Furthermore, we're required to post all jobs online, and this job was posted as a level 2 manager position...so it's not like they're downgrading the role. Even the manager that's leaving the company was surprised that this was not accompanied with a promotion (only directors can hand out promotions, not managers, so that opportunity isn't in his control)
So at the end of my midyear, assuming my manager & director don't bring it up, I plan to surface the promotion conversation. I'm not totally certain the wording I should use as I talk about it...what do you think?
I was planning to bring up that I'm excited to take on the additional scope of work and happy that they feel the confidence in me to assume the role, but that I wanted to understand and clarify whether a promotion to level 2 mgr was something I could expect. If not, what would I need to demonstrate to secure that promotion and fully assume the role of level 2 manager?

I would say that you know manager 2 is leaving, that they posted the position, and that you are interested in that promotion. Then, sell yourself via a compliment to them, basically that you appreciate them asking you to help out, and this clearly means they believe you are qualified for the manager 2 position.
So had my midyear. No surprises, am happy with the feedback all very positive. I did ask about the promotion and asked if there was anything I needed to do developmentally to get it since we were talking development, etc. and he said "no, just keep doing what you're doing, don't change a thing. Working through some process things so just keep doing what you're doing".
So good I guess? Sounds like it's in the works maybe just a matter of a little bit of time.
Sounds like a good update! But I would make a mental note to check back with them if you don't hear anything further within, say, 3 months or so. It's easy for long processes to stall or get lost in someone's inbox.
I haven't been over here on MM in a while, but good timing I checked tonight! Sounds positive. Things can be so slow-moving and bureaucratic in the company. My H's title is 2-3 steps behind his actual function, and his new director just approved his title change (and new pay rate, which is still unknown to H...). Anyway--I'm sure it's yours!
