I think parents who let their kids play on wheelchair accessible swings are just the worst ever. I'm sure this isn't unpopular but I've been seeing it so much lately.

What about if we are the only ones on the playground?

Uh, no? I saw some kid break it once. How hard is it to tell kids it's only intended for wheelchair use?

It's a big red swing. It's fun. Breaking it means the kid was being an asshole. My kids will continue to use it as long as they do so appropriately and no one else needs it.

You're kidding me. What kind of crappy swings do you have at your park? Here they are super heave with durable harnesses. Mostly made of metal and plastic. There is no way a kid could break them. Part of the harness is fabric and it's the material fire hoses are made out of- incredibly sturdy
I guess we're all just the worst parents ever. My kids will probably be entitled now, because I let them use the handicapped accessible swing.
We have a whole playground that is accessible - I will tell everyone who goes there w/ an able-bodied kid that they are the worst ever.
Jynx;) actually I think most parents at the special needs playground like having our typically developing kids there. Inclusion and acceptance and all.
It has literally never crossed my mind that letting DS swing on that swing would be the wrong thing to do. Obviously if a disabled child were to show up I'd get him off of it, but that has not happened yet.

FTR, I'm talking about swings like that green style. The ones I've seen are usually red. We don't have many if any of those second ones that the whole chair goes on. At least not that I can think of.

The former I let my kids play on (assuming there's not a handicapped kid waiting obviously who couldn't use a regular swing). I'm talking of the latter--the swings that a whole wheelchair can accommodate.
I haven't seen one in person to know, but I could see how a kid would think it would be fun to stand on it and make it swing. I'd have to base letting them do it on seeing the swing in person - but I think I'd be less likely to allow it.

So all the non wheelchair bound kids are told no no no you can't go on that swing....then when a child in a wheelchair or with a walker shows up & is using it, all the other little kids will gather around, stare & point & whine about why that kid gets to use it. Awesome way to teach about differences & inclusion to all.
So there is a mom at my kids school that has kids the same age as me (8,6 and 1). Kinder is going on a feild trip to the zoo today and her 8 year old was upset she didn't get to go. So instead of telling her to suck it up. She is not sending them to school and they are doing a family zoo day. I judge that hard!
