I'd unfriend.. I'm bitter because the job market crashed just before I graduated and I know so many people with sensible degrees and successful internships who are working those jobs "designed for high school students." It has nothing to do with no marketable skills.
That said, I think it's appalling how little many in the military make.
Teens aren't the ones flipping burgers anymore, though. And people working in fast food can't help that our military is paid low wages. Comparing the two fields is ridiculous.
But honest question - does the $18K for the private include all compensation? Don't they get additional housing allowance money on top of that?
well they at least get lots of benefits that aren't usually available to other minimum wage workers, starting with healthcare. I'm sure there are tons of others, but I'll leave it to a far more educated person to elaborate on those benefits.

I'm not hip to all of the knowledge, but typically there's housing provided or a housing allowance, free healthcare, pay when you're in a combat zone/TDY/deployment (again, not totally hip to the knowledge) is often untaxed at least federally, etc.
And let's not get too high on the "skills" you have to have to join up in the military. You absolutely develop skills there, but to get in it's a physical and some literacy/vocational aptitude stuff.
Are some (many? all?) of our military members dramatically underpaid? Yes. Are they skilled? Yes. Is working in a war zone harder than working at McDonalds? Yes. I am not down on the military. But this is a pisspoor comparison and, as pointed out above, the fact that someone else has it worse doesn't mean that a bad situation should go unremedied.
This is sorta related. Yesterday a relative (stylist) was posting about the $15/hour thing, and one of her friends was ranting about greedy corporations and how folks need a livable wage. Relative called them out right there and mentioned that she does Ranting Friend's cuts for a very low price as a friend and Ranting Friend rarely leaves good tips, and so Ranting Friend doesn't even give her own friends a livable wage.
Ranting Friend hasn't been back to that discussion since.

That 18k (and I'm actually not sure if that's currently accurate) is base pay only. It doesn't include housing, hazard or special skills pay, or the value of free healthcare.
Also many start as a higher rank. If they don't they don't stay e1 for long. Like for months only. .
$35k is base pay for fuck's sake. That likely doesn't include BAH (housing), definitely doesn't include combat pay (for when you're in a place where you get shot at, you don't get that otherwise), BAS, nor does it take into consideration that you aren't paying for healthcare, only pay $12/mo or so for dental insurance, have access to the GI Bill, VA services, special loan types, car buying programs, or the fact that everyone and their mama, particularly if you live close to a military base offers military discounts.
Oh or how about AER, which is the army's program for helping military members with financial emergencies?
How about the thirty days leave you get every year to do whatever the fuck you want?
How about a rather predictable work schedule when you're not deployed that gets you off work by 5ish and leaves your weekends free.
How about all of that military appreciation shit hosted both on post and by civilians?
How about the military housing members have access which might not always be awesome but is still a far sight better than low income housing, shitty ass neighborhoods, trailer parks, etc?
What about that list the military puts out warning members about local scams, predatory lenders, local businesses that take advantage of military members?
How about the exceptional dependent program (can't remember if that's the official name) that is designed to help military members care for their special needs children?
Or the fact that your entire deployment pay is tax fucking free if you earn it while stationed in a combat zone?? And if you get a resign bonus while deployed, ALSO TAX FREE?
All of that shit and more are protections and benefits that are NOT afforded your average low income worker so how about this heifer just shuts the fuck up and stops talking about shit she doesn't know or understand.
Plenty of people serving will go their entire career doing nothing more strenuous than a PT test and for that, a nation will hail them as downtrodden and underpaid and yet completely worthy of respect regardless of who they are as a person. They will be seen as a hero even if they are epic misogynist, racist douchebags who spend their weekends doing coke and sexually harassing their coworkers. They will be given the benefit of the doubt in nearly all situations.
Low income workers? Please. They just need to make better choices. They could be the best people, the kindest, most giving, hardest worker, best friend, great spouse but will always be seen as someone who is probably sucking off the government teat and lazy to boot.
So yeah, I'm feeling some kind of way. I'd probably go the fuck off on her.

I have had someone I know post this "rant" before and as others have said it's flawed in a number of ways. It's also pretty mean. The person who I know who posted it is a family member who is of retirement age. I thought it showed a total lack of empathy.
Recently I saw a man her age working at Zoe's Kitchen. Who knows why he was working there; could be for personal engagement or it could be because the financial crisis affected him and he's not as lucky as she is to just retire, or it could be some other reason entirely, but I wasn't going to judge. When I read her post I just kept thinking about the man and how unkind these words were. I hate to think of my family member sitting in a restaurant just judging away another person like that, but I guess she is.

Right? I mean if you want a more accurate picture, it would be like being paid 18k while in vocational school.

....
How about the exceptional dependent program (can't remember if that's the official name) that is designed to help military members care for their special needs children?
Well, the predictable schedule and leaving at 5, yeah, that's not all that likely in my (vicarious) experience. But it generally is for the junior enlisted.
The familiy program is EFMP. Exceptional family members. It also applies to spouses. A lot of people complain about it, but I think it's a great resource.
This rant always pisses me off. My husband was in the military and yeah like HBC the benefits are phenomenal. I would fucking love Tricare right about now as my daughter's medical bills are starting to roll in. Her having about 6-7 echoes and ekgs since birth are fucking expensive. And she's only 2 months old. Not to mention our hospital bill from my delivery. And we have decent health insurance right now.
And generally the ones in the military who somehow have no money are the ones who usually have no money management skills. See: buying brand new cars at ridiculous interest rates. I would unfriend.

That's not about rank though and more about your H's MOS or whatever they call it in your branch. Infantry officers are getting home at a reasonable time and golfing on the weekends pretty regularly when they aren't out in the field.
Also. Im pretty sure that not all members are putting their lives in danger every day. My H was in 5 years and never deployed to a combat zone. Two west pacs to Japan though lol.
I mean, I know very little about the military so I completely believe/accept what HBC said above about the good benefits etc. It's a stupid comparison.
BUT even if that were not the case, and even if the base pay was just 18k flat with zero other benefits, wouldnt that mean that we should pay military members more, not fast food workers less? The two aren't comparable. It's not like if someone in the military gets paid more, the McDonald's worker gets less.
Besides that, that rant is just really mean-spirited. "haha! look at you! you dont have any skills! you're working at McDonald's! HAHA YOUR FAULT!"
I think I would have to defriend someone who posted that.
I KNOW WHO SHE REMINDS ME OF NOW. That Britt whoever from ESPN who cussed out the tow lot!

Yeah I would just copy and paste this and then unfriend
If you do, don't tag me. I keep my potty mouth on the low lolol
Actually I have always been surprised that you are not that controversial on FB!
I'm particular about the audiences I show myself too lol. But really, I work with kids at church and I wouldn't want anything to fuck with that. I would also hate for my FB shenanigans to ruin employment chances.
