$35k is base pay for fuck's sake. That likely doesn't include BAH (housing), definitely doesn't include combat pay (for when you're in a place where you get shot at, you don't get that otherwise), BAS, nor does it take into consideration that you aren't paying for healthcare, only pay $12/mo or so for dental insurance, have access to the GI Bill, VA services, special loan types, car buying programs, or the fact that everyone and their mama, particularly if you live close to a military base offers military discounts.
Oh or how about AER, which is the army's program for helping military members with financial emergencies?
How about the thirty days leave you get every year to do whatever the fuck you want?
How about a rather predictable work schedule when you're not deployed that gets you off work by 5ish and leaves your weekends free.
How about all of that military appreciation shit hosted both on post and by civilians?
How about the military housing members have access which might not always be awesome but is still a far sight better than low income housing, shitty ass neighborhoods, trailer parks, etc?
What about that list the military puts out warning members about local scams, predatory lenders, local businesses that take advantage of military members?
How about the exceptional dependent program (can't remember if that's the official name) that is designed to help military members care for their special needs children?
Or the fact that your entire deployment pay is tax fucking free if you earn it while stationed in a combat zone?? And if you get a resign bonus while deployed, ALSO TAX FREE?
All of that shit and more are protections and benefits that are NOT afforded your average low income worker so how about this heifer just shuts the fuck up and stops talking about shit she doesn't know or understand.
Plenty of people serving will go their entire career doing nothing more strenuous than a PT test and for that, a nation will hail them as downtrodden and underpaid and yet completely worthy of respect regardless of who they are as a person. They will be seen as a hero even if they are epic misogynist, racist douchebags who spend their weekends doing coke and sexually harassing their coworkers. They will be given the benefit of the doubt in nearly all situations.
Low income workers? Please. They just need to make better choices. They could be the best people, the kindest, most giving, hardest worker, best friend, great spouse but will always be seen as someone who is probably sucking off the government teat and lazy to boot.
So yeah, I'm feeling some kind of way. I'd probably go the fuck off on her.
Yeah I would just copy and paste this and then unfriend
agreed. I wanted to stand up and cheer when I read what HBC wrote. Perfect.

1) It's not just fast food employees getting min wage. Home health care workers? Child care workers? Teacher's aids? 2) This is the kind of thing that blames the victim, almost. Oh, yeah, it's your own damn fault that the only job you can get pays minimum wage when we've decided to reward an economic system in which paying people the literal bare minimum and not giving employees any discernible skills rewards those at the top with bonuses and higher salaries! It's not like the fact that our country worships McDonald's and Walmart is a PROBLEM or anything! Or that they build their employee base on interchangeable, low skilled employees who qualify for government assistance.
This person is blaming the wrong people. It's not the single mother who wants to make another $7/hour who is ruining her life.

Well, the predictable schedule and leaving at 5, yeah, that's not all that likely in my (vicarious) experience. But it generally is for the junior enlisted.
The familiy program is EFMP. Exceptional family members. It also applies to spouses. A lot of people complain about it, but I think it's a great resource.
Not always even the junior enlisted. Mine was doing 12 on/12 off for months prior to deployment, on boats every other month for our first marriage and didn't see our first child until she was six months old. And we had it easy since he wasn't getting shot at. But the shore duty was generally an 8-10 regular shift with free weekends unless he was on-call or pulling watch.
But yeah, I saw that same post and was WTFing because I remember getting BAQ to live off-base that covered most of our rent (and often it's more than the market rate or if people share housing - like we did in a SFH with friends - we made a profit.) Plus food. Free housing on base, but we still got food, all utilities paid except for phone, free healthcare (my most expensive delivery was $25 because we had him in a civilian hospital), and so on and so forth. The Navy pretty much shut down an auto dealership in the Navy town where XH lives because they were selling cars to enlisted that couldn't afford them; they prohibited sales for two years to any military and so the doors closed. Compared to being Sally McBurgerFlipper, it's Apples and Bananas.
ETA: and ditto the PP on "it's not just people flipping burgers." It's a lot of service workers out there, including the ones caring for your parents and grandparents, the ones serving you food, and all the rest of them, that are affected. And the CEO compensation is something like 300x more than what their employees make. I don't think any executive needs to make >$20M while the worker makes <$20K. (did I get that right?)
I don't think you should unfollow or unfriend. You should reply and engage. I used to unfriend but now I think it's counterproductive. Respectfully argue if you disagree, but I don't like just letting people throw their crazy around without addressing it

I usually chew people out and unfriend them before they can respond.
My cousin posted this. And she IS poor. She works for minimum wage, her husband for a little more and they receive food assistance.
I just commented that I think all that proves is that soldiers are underpaid--and from what I have read before, a lot of low level military are poor (though at least with decent healthcare).

Thank you. The only other "or" I had to add was...
Or that when your military days are done, you automatically get sent to the top of the applicants list when applying for any Federal job, whether you have the minimum requirements for the open job or not.

This is not true. You do have to be qualified for the job you are applying for. Military pay-grades do have an equivalent GS pay grade.

It all depends. If the vet is the right GS equivalent, the rest of the requirements often become "nice-to-haves" vs real requirements.

No, you really do have to be qualified. Now, if you're saying that a vet will be placed higher on the list than a non-vet with the exact same qualifications? Yes, they will. But, they have to meet the minimum qualifications for the job. And, there are even ways to work around that if the hiring official requests to pull their lists certain ways. (I'm a vet and I hire for a federal agency.)
ETA: And, I should also add that the selecting official does have to select a vet if one shows up above a non-vet or have a very compelling reason why they didn't. That has also happened.

And I have seen more than one case where a job opening was cancelled because the hiring org wanted to put a vet in the job that did not meet the job requirements. Like a position is for a System Admin for a program running on XYZ language, so requires experience with XYZ language; agency told to hire vet with no experience in XYZ language over non-vet with experience in XYZ language. One example I have know of took 4 attempts at listing the job opening before they could get the hiring org to agree on a non-vet with the needed experience. It shouldn't happen, but it does (and I know it shouldn't happen but the reqs part of my comment was based on experience, not law).
That said, even getting to the front of the line when they have the needed experience is a pretty damn good benefit that fast food workers don't have.
This arguments pushes my buttons, because paying fast food workers more doesn't take money away from other low-paid workers, it takes money away from McDonalds shareholders and other assorted millionaires.
The fact that very wealthy and powerful people have set us (the peons) to fighting amongst ourselves while laughing all the way to the bank, drives me batty.
Yeah, arguing over who has it worse is not a great argument. I think it is similar to comparing Social Security to various other social programs. It can be a distraction from a united effort to give everyone a decent standard of living.
