Ugh, I know people who have run the marathon (not elite, just people who finish) and they end up with bloody feet/lost toenails. It's gross.
I've almost passed out at the finish of 5ks before, so I know marathoning is not for me. Also, I wear the capris. Chub rub is real issue with running shorts.
I lost 7 toenails after one marathon.

My roommate - who also ran and finished much, much faster than I did - asked me if I wanted to go get pedicures about a week later. I was like, "uh, do you think I'll get a 70% discount?"
Oh my god.
My mom's run 9 marathons and she keeps trying to get me to run one with her but I'm just like *-). Now I have another excuse other than I'm lazy and hate running.

I would have no problems puking during or after any race. It's shitting myself during a race that scares the hell out of me. I've gotten over my fear of port-o-potties thanks to running.
I'm glad they mentioned the cyclists. There's usually a cyclist or motorcycle cop escorting the leader to make sure the course is open ahead and everything is legit. I find it hard to believe someone could fake a win because of that. There's a LOT of attention on the person at the front. I have a friend who is running Boston and she blogs about her races, and it sounds very exciting to be first, and like something I will never know.
Seriously - this is what the frontrunners' experience looks like:
(youtube video of this year's LA Marathon) I watch the front runners every year and stay until the 5:00 pace group runs through. Then I go home and lay on the couch. I love marathon spectating!
My favorite thing about this is I kind of want to say to the runners, "Hey...you could just hop in the car behind you...it can get you where you need to go!"
Hey, that video has my friend and kid's school teacher in it! She was 5th this year and you can clearly see her in the front pack!
Wow that's amazing! Does she train year round?
I ran three blocks to get to my marathon viewing spot in time to see the men run by and I had to bend over to catch my breath.
Oh yeah, she's a super runner. She doesn't like all the "fame" and advice people ask her also. She really is training for the Olympic trials and has a grant to do that. She loves being a teacher b/c she can really ramp up her running in the summer and with her recent grant (or winnings? or something) she might be able to afford take a sabbatical nearer to the trials (next year).
It's 50+ pages and I'm only about halfway through (slow night, lol). Someone who is clearly either Kip or a sympathizer is in there with DOZENS of AEs extolling his virtues and defending him(self) and stirring up shit. At one point there is a post claiming to be a legit runner vouching for Kip, and the real runner later contacts the web site to say, "I don't know this guy and didn't write that post." Other highlights: one troll tries to vouch for KL by claiming to have run a race finishing behind KL when the alleged poster was FOURTEEN and remembers him four years later, including what he was wearing that day. There is also some really icky stuff where he talks about his wife as if he was a stranger and discusses how hot she is/asks for naked pics. Then there is some downright hilarious stuff that was essentially like, "I live near Kip and saw him out for dinner the other night with friends. Looked like they were having a great time, he and a buddy were commanding all the attention. Why is he so awesome??" and "If KL were to ever face anyone from this thread in a boxing ring, his fists would rain down fury and you would regret everything you're saying!"
Highly entertaining, but OMG, dude is a sad, strange man.

I work a BQ marathon every year for work. I love hanging by the finish line. I get so excited and think next year is the year I do the half. No the full! I will do the full and raise a ton of money and it will be awesome. And then the next year rolls around we get about two months out from the race and I remember that I haven't trained at all so I just get my relay team back together again, raise a moderate amount of money and complete my leg while watching the real racers compete. It is so much fun. The entire weekend is really, the expo, carbs dinner, post-race party- I love it all.

Wait, what? And people think this is fun?!?
I was dumb and wore socks I didn't train in that had padded toes.
I usually lost at least 2 or 3 toenails until I discovered Brooks shoes that have a wide toe box, but that was an epic year and I never made that mistake again.
Yeah, I doubt someone with those times can win a marathon. I run my 1/2 marathons in 2 hours and 4 minutes with no specific marathon training and I am nowhere near the female winners. This is very suspicious. I guess she could have trained a ton with the help of a pro but I doubt it.
No, she didn't cross any of the checkpoints. Definitely cheated without a doubt. (And the time she finished the half in is close to the time she crossed the finish line in. I can see improving a ton - I certainly did by quite a bit - but I sure didn't cut my time in half, and her true pace is pretty close to mine.)
The local 10k in my city run every year you can tell the elite runners from us regular joes.. You absolutely can determine level friom outfit. Chub rub is real.
the race organizers, in conjunction with the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, celebrated the real winner last night at the Cardinals baseball game, complete with ribbon breaking and 30,000 people cheering the finish line. I know it's not the same, but I am glad they are really making an effort to celebrate the real winner. I've also noticed that the race organizers have mentioned Andrea's name in every interview they give. Marathon winner to re-create 'breaking of tape' at Busch
Andrea Karl crossed the finish line at the GO! St. Louis marathon to polite applause last weekend, having seemed to finish second in the women’s division.
On Sunday night, the marathon’s true winner will receive a more significant response when she re-creates the finish of the race in a ceremony at Busch Stadium before the Cardinals play the Reds at 7:05 p.m.
Karl will get to break the tape at home plate, an honor that eluded her after 26.2 miles when Kendall Schler crossed the finish line first. Karl later crossed the line without much notice and was told another woman had won. Race officials then discovered that Schler hadn’t run the entire race and disqualified her.
“It will be exciting to break the tape and kind of celebrate the win,” Karl said. “I’m honored they’re going to such lengths. It wasn’t necessary, but I feel blessed and thankful.”
Karl also was recognized by the Blues, who invited her to Saturday’s first-round playoff game at Scottrade Center, where she watched from a suite. She went for a run in Forest Park in the morning and was taken aback as people recognized and congratulated her.
She said the outpouring of interest has coincided with a busy time at school, where she is a doctoral candidate in genetics and genomics at Washington University.
“I’m very surprised. I had no indication anything like this would happen,” she said. “Just the interest in the story has been mind-blowing. I’m still in shock.
“I’ve had great opportunities this weekend, so I’m excited. But I’m also making sure when I get home I’m getting my nose to the grind. I’m enjoying the moment but have to remember why I’m here and be dedicated to my studies.”
She said she has had to turn off her phone to escape the barrage of messages from friends and family.
Former Olympic champion Jackie Joyner-Kersee and Donn Sorensen, regional president of Mercy health care, a marathon sponsor, are expected to be on hand for Sunday’s ceremony. They posed for photos with Schler after the race, not knowing of the confusion about to unfold.
Karl repeated that she never saw another woman running in front of her during the marathon as she was being escorted by bicyclists assigned to ride with the leader.
Officials believe Schler cut the course short in 2014 and this year. In 2014 she was credited with a third-place finish and a time that qualified for Monday’s Boston Marathon. However, her 2014 race finish was also disqualified, and she will not be allowed to run in Boston.
Karl has won the first two marathons she has entered. She won the Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon last fall in 3 hours, 1 minute. Her time last week was 2:54.28. She said she might enter her next marathon this fall.
This whole story is crazy. Also so are marathon runners. I'm doing the Zombies, Run! 5K training and I still can't run more than 4 minutes at a time. Probably doesn't help that I'm about 80 lbs overweight.
The fact that I said you lot who run marathons are crazy doesn't mean I'm not hella impressed, btw.
