Go! I liked Kauai more than Maui but both were awesome. I know you can fly direct from Chicago to Kauai at certain times of the year so I would guess you could to Maui too.
We went to Maui last August. such an amazing vacation. Mama's fish house was really, really good. We also are at Merrimans and that was really good, too. We stayed in Wailea at the Andaz and it was a beautiful property with great service, and a bit more adult focused than some other resorts, which could be good since you'll be kid free.

Yes! Kauai is the most beautiful IMO but if you can only fly direct, stay on Oahu. The north shore is pretty chill, but even the north end of Waikiki has fewer people. And great restaurants.
Is your only nonstop option to Oahu? If so, I would stay at the JW Marriot at Ko Olina. Spend one day checking out the north shore, spend one hiking diamond head and doing Waikiki and the rest of your time vegging at the beautiful hotel. We've been there twice and it's great--convenience of Oahu but well away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu.
If you can get a nonstop to Maui, I would stay in Wailea.
This is great advice, but sadly the JW Marriott Olina was sold to the Four Seasons in January. Still a great property but no longer with Marriot (and Marriot points).
Oahu is a wonderful island. All beaches are public property, so even if a hotel is nearby, you can get on the beach and enjoy all day sunning and swimming. Rent a jeep and drive around, you will love it. Find a local food truck and eat the most amazing shrimp off paper plates. Use your guide book to find coves for snorkeling. Watch surfers catch amazing waves off the Northern coast. And be prepared to eat the lightest, most delicious Jspenese food of your life - with so many Japenese tourists coming to HI, too, you get amazing options.
