I may be taking a job there. Any particular areas to stay away from? Any you would recommend? I would be moving from Northwestern Montana, but I'm fairly new to the state.
I lived there for five years! It has a bad rap among my college friends as too old/boring as compared to Missoula or Bozeman, but I loved it! Lots of charm with the old neighborhoods and downtown. Great trail system, great breweries, a few excellent restaurants.
On areas to live, there are a few more run down portions of town (near Helena Ave/railroad tracks/some parts near towntown) but no bad areas really. Nice neighborhoods include around the capitol, south hills, readers village, sunhaven. A lot of people live out in the north valley for cheaper housing, lots of new developments out there if you don't mind a short commute.

The only thing I know about Helena, MT is that the mnemonic my mom taught me to remember that it's the capital of MT is that "it would be hell to live in Montana" which always pissed off my Uncle Don, who came from there and loved it. Sorry, not helpful.

I'm moving to Bozeman on Tuesday, but my family's lake house is in Helena (Hauser) and I enjoy it when we're there. I haven't spent a ton of time in town, but there's definitely worse places to live.
I don't know if I'd give up Kalispell though. I really like that area.
