Newp. It actually gave more insight into Nick's thoughts. He agreed with her that he would be bored with a regular chick. He's just as messed up as she is.
The book went into more detail about how fucked up Nick was.
I thought the movie made him a much more sympathetic character. I didn't like that.
I didn't read the book, but in the movie I couldn't figure out why he was considered so awful.
In the book, nick is going through the early scenes of her disappearance and then there are her fake diary entries sprinkled through. So you're reading her fake perspective which makes him look like a monster.
I was up in here all "I fucking hate nick!" And then 10 pages later I came back all "oops...yeah....that....was unexpected."
But the book goes into more backstory and the thought process behind the choices made- stuff that's really hard to demonstrate on film through action.
The sperm was banked as a kind of insurance policy to keep Nick at her side.
The NPH and weird bar dude are fleshed out a little more. The creep factor of the parents is stronger in the book and the dysfunction/betrayal in the that relationship make more sense in the book. In the book, it's more evident that "Amy" is her parents' cash cow and are more suspect in Nick's mind.
I read the book- it wasn't a typical fun read and I guessed about half way through where it was going generally. DH saw only the movie and likened it to a late 1950's film noir piece- almost like old time Hitch where there is no hero.
I liked the book a bit better than the film because it went into more detail on all the things explained upthread.
But I did think the part of Amy was cast perfectly. A friend who saw the movie having not read the book said he didn't get Amy - was the actor just not doing a good job? She seemed so void of emotion and detached. I said yes, exactly. That's how she is. It was perfect!
