A local department store (like target, but only on WA) had a huge sale on athletic shoes. I bought some Nikes discounted from $120 to $22. Except that the check out guy didn't charge me. I got all the way out to the car before I realized it, and I debated just going home. Both kids are sick and DH was making dinner, and I'd been gone for awhile.
But I went back in and the CS guy was all, "this never happens. Thanks for your honestly. Your karma bank must be full!"
which is nice and all, and I mean, it's only $22.
But it then I thought of ML, because I gather that probably 90% of you would have gone back in. So, a poll.
With no kids in tow, I'd definitely go back inside. If I had kids along or it was nasty weather, I'd go home and call customer service and pay by phone.
Freddy's was doing 70% off clearance today. I was there at close, when they were switching signs to 50% off clearance. Dammit.
POOP! I was just saying yesterday that I need to go to Freddy's to get some new shoes for Tman. I always get him awesome Nikes for like $15 on those sales.
"$5.50 isn't worth my karma." Truth young woman, TRUTH!
I remember being a little kid and my mom got extra money for change at the grocers and gave it back to the cashier. I was all MOM free money! and she did the kind look at me, and said "character is never for sale". Never forgot it, and always paid back/paid up on this kind of thing.
That's great, I love that. A really good way for her to give a life lesson.

If I was already at my car or at home when I realized the mistake, I'd try calling to see if they could just charge my card over the phone so I wouldn't have to go back to the store. No idea if they would, but worth a shot.
We were doing a scavenger hunt yesterday with my Brownies. We had some difficult to find ones and a couple of our girls were "I just saw a heron fly by" and "I just saw a bird nest." I told Heron girl that we couldn't count it since she didn't show it to anybody else, and when the second one popped off with "bird's nest" I told her "It's close enough that you can show it to me. But otherwise it's dishonest." "Well, maybe I imagined it then. It must have been my imagination." She didn't like to be characterized as dishonest, but she also didn't want to admit to it.
Fortunately, we found a bird's nest later in the hunt, so we were able to remain honest.
Definitely would run back into the store. I would feel like a thief, even though I didn't steal the shoes. But that's just me. I feel better when I'm totally honest.
