I've always just grabbed mine from ON or Target, but I just don't care for the styles this year. None of my suits fit me from previous years, so I have to buy for the summer. I'm going to try Athleta, but that's about $50 just for a bikini top. I'm fine spending that and I've been moving toward buying better quality items anyway, but it's a bit of sticker shock after ON sales, LOL. Where do you shop?
I do lands end bc they have a lot of styles and can mix and match styles and sizes. They're expensive IMO, but worth it because the fit is great and I can get pieces long enough (I'm 5'10/5'11 ish)

Lands End. It's mom suit heaven plus tummy control panels and extended cup sizes. I always but plain black and only have to replace it every few years. Some of their options are frumpy but I think they also have cute bikini separates. They're very well-made.

I know you said you didn't want cheap but I highly recommend the Catalina line from walmart. I have this one I bought last spring based on a recommendation from this board.
Super flattering and held up well--still looks brand new. We go to the beach nearly everyday and I only have two suits so it's been heavily worn/washed. My mom is a swimmer and goes swimming 4-5xs a week and also has excellent luck with their swimwear.

Macy's, Lord and Taylor, Ann Taylor, Target and Old Navy.
I usually buy a couple nice suits and a couple from ON or Target. I think you definitely get what you pay for in terms of quality. I wear the less expensive suits if I'm doing something where my bathing suit might get ruined.

I have to know...what kind of activites might ruin a swim suit??

Basically any time I'm not just lounging by the pool. Surf lessons, tubing, or if I know I'm going to be in a heavily chlorinated pool or will be hopping in and out of the water a lot since the decks tend to ruin my bathing suit bottoms (I don't usually use the ladders to get in and out).
See, I would love to get a tankini, but it is so hard to find one that fits. If it fits in the bust, it floats around my ribs. If it fits in the ribs, the bust is too small. I tried on this one, it's sort of adjustable, but the bottom part is too big. athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1026479&vid=1&pid=439084002
I can do a regular halter style bikini top that ties under the bust, I just need to find one I like.

I was going to say this too. It feels weird to be recommending Walmart, but I have several suits from that line and LOVE them and they've held up well...I think one is 3 years old and getting worn, but 3 years is great for that price IMO. ETA: Mine are all one-pieces, if you search Catalina brand at walmart they should all come up.

I appreciate this thread because I'm in desperate need of a new suit and the idea of trying a bunch on in poor lighting is giving me hives. I am thinking of ordering the walmart one. Any advice as to sizing? Some reviews said it runs small. I'm not super tall but pretty busty so I'm not sure if I should do medium or large?

It definitely runs big. I'm a 32D and wear size 6-8 in pants. I'm generally a medium in bathing suits but had to get a small.
They do have a size chart online, but I wonder how accurate it is. I wish they would also give the rib measurements, not just the bust. I may have to actually go to the store.

Marshal's or TJ Maxx usually have a good selection early in the season. I am a tough fit. For 2 piece suits I like Nordstrom because you can buy different sizes for top and bottom.

You piqued my interest in this suit. I'm a 36D and size 12 so I'm so torn whether I should order a m or l since the m sounds too small and the l sounds like it could be too big. Would you try the m??? Halp!

The m sounds about right. Generally when ordering online I just order two sizes and return whatever doesn't fit for a refund.
Probably, but where can I find them that won't cost a small fortune? Swimsuit shopping is such a pain.
I got my suit with DDD cups at Lands End half off. Sometimes the big cup sizes or certain colors are on sale. I am cheap but consider it well spent. I would have bought 3 $35 suits I hated if I hadn't gotten it.
