We've been in the PICU since Thursday on the vent and requiring lots of O2 and nitric. They have run every panel and culture waiting on something to come back. RSV came back negative and we got to stop wearing gowns and masks. We just got word he has some respitory illness similar to RSV that the nurses have never heard of but the Dr is familiar with.Anyone familiar with Metapneumovirus? I just read on the cdc website that is presents with ear infection 60% of the time and it was noted on admit that his left eardrum around his tube was red. It's spread through contact so we have to wear gowns and gloves now touching him.
Glad you know what it is finally!! What's the treatment?
Just keep him comfortable and let it pass. They are giving lasix to dry out his lungs and steroids to open his airways. It presents like a common cold but he may have aspirated when he was coughing and gotten pneumonia so he is also on broad spectrum antibiotics.
