DH had a vasectomy but I was also put on Mirena three years ago to help control my heavy bleeding. Insertion was done right as my period was getting ready to start so my cervix would already be softer - there was still some significant discomfort especially when they had trouble getting it placed right. Unfortunately I have not been as lucky as most Mirena users who stop having a period. I bleed close to three weeks a month with random heavy bursts so next month I will be going in for a tubal and ablation. My dr. discussed doing essure and an office procedure ablation but there is a twelve week waiting period to make sure it takes effect before I could do the ablation. I would much rather be put under general anesthesia for laparoscopic surgery and have it all done at once then have to go through two dilation and local anesthesia procedures with only OTC meds.
I tried the paraguard and mirena and both were absolutely awful. One I had to have removed in an emergency situation (mirena) Right now I'm just doing the pill as needed and we'll see

Dh will get a vasectomy, I have a mirena for now, and if it permanently chases off my periods I'll probably replace it even after dh is snipped.
Fwiw, IUD insertion isn't necessarily given to be awful. A child free friend of mine got a paraguard IUD because she can't use hormonal BC, and she said that while it hurt, it wasn't as bad as she expected and was over quickly. Anecdotes!
I don't know for sure if I will ever have kids, but I have the Mirena IUD. My insertion was not "incredibly painful". I'm on my second one, so I've had two insertions. Obviously it didn't hurt bad enough for me to avoid doing it again. I love it.
I have Mirena and have never had a child. It hurt like hell going in (and for hours after, and twinges over the following days), but I think it was worth it. I was on the pill for 15 years before that, but I'm loving not having to remember to take a pill and not getting a period (I get a tiny bit of spotting but it is super minor).
Something that I don't like about Mirena, though, is that I get crampy during what should be my "period." I had no cramps when I was on the pill. Still, even as someone who was very good about remembering to take the pill, it is reaaaaaally nice to not have to think about birth control.
I'm on the pill, we don't want kids. H has said he'll get a vasectomy but taking the pill isn't an issue for me, so I prefer to just keep going this way.
I had the Paraguard and hated it. Insertion hurt but it wasn't something I wouldn't do again because of the pain. I did get horribly heavy bleeding and cramps and had it removed after 6 months. The first month I had bad cramps and spotted the entire month which was really annoying.
I actually have an appt today to talk to my doctor about BCP. Sigh...
Long term, H will get a vasectomy. I had an IUD but my body rejected it (and I'm still sad). So for now, I'm giving the patch a whirl and in a bit we'll either proceed with something permanent or I might try Mirena one more time. Doc said we could do it once more, but if I kick it out, that option is done.
I have one in my arm, Nexaplaon. I've had it since July of last year and only have a period 2-3 times, and that's usually due to spending a week or more with a female around her cycle. Lol.
It last for 3 years and I haven't had any side effects. It was a quick and easy incession and no need to take pain meds.
It was the best option for me because I've never had children and didn't feel comfortable with something in my ute.

I'm on my third Mirena and have no children. It hurt going in the first time (and for a few days later), but each subsequent one went more smoothly. I haven't had a period in over a decade.
The strings on my current one are "missing." It is in the right place, but they strings were sucked up into my cervix. It could be a bit tricky to remove depending on how far up they are, but I have a few years before I need to worry about that. At that point I think I'll ask DH to get a vasectomy just because I think it should be his turn. He's already agreed to it.

GL.
I think I am going to talk to my OB about Nexplanon....even though I had a child I do not want something in my uterus either.
I've never been pregnant and just had Mirena put in last January. I was actually only there to ask questions and gyno pretty much didn't give me a choice and had me go back the next morning since I was already on my period. But good thing because I would have chickened out. It hurt like hell going in but 4 months later I hardly remember it and am enjoying not having to remember to take the pill or waiting for my period. I was on the pill for almost 10 years so every once in a while I'll reach for it during my nightly routine lol. I had spotting twice in the first month but no more spotting, periods, cramps, etc, since then.
My gyno said I would be crampy for a few days but I had too many errands to just sit around. I was in and out of the car and stores. Omg all I wanted to do was curl up in bed. But it actually helped moving around and I was only crampy for half the day. By that night, I didn't even notice it anymore. So I'm glad I was out and about.
After getting pregnant with DD2 on the mini-pill whilst breastfeeding #1 and not having gotten a period, DH had a vasectomy 3 months after DD2 was born.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
DH just got a vasectomy. I had four pregnancies (three kids/one miscarriage), took the pill for years, had two IUDs (one of which got me pregnant), tore my vagina three times. I figured it was his turn.
My friend literally just had the Essure thing removed yesterday because she is allergic to the nickel that it's made from. It caused a lot of scar tissue and a lot of paint.

I had the Mirena between the two kids and had a period every month anyway . It was nice not to have to remember the pill though. DH got a V last year when we knew we were done.

seriously leaning towards an IUD simply for the convenience
at 40 my babymaking days are coming to a screeching halt and FAST !! when my mom was my age, she was dx as perimenopausal and went on the depo shot until menopause was done.
