I ended up finding a list intended for medical residents just googling "town name houses for rent." I found a lot more listings that way. Most of the landlords I talked to were happy to rent to us. They said normally just having to go the extra step beyond the standard sites weeded out a lot of potential bad renters so maybe check with one of the hospitals in your area.

It is highly location dependent. We score tenants in 4 minutes on craigslist, now, but it used to be more via other local websites, and in other areas, other websites are better.

In our old state craigslist was a good option. In our new state rentals go through a realtor, which is new to me. We found a couple we liked on Trulia and Zillow called the listing agents. One listing agent also offered to find us others in the area, so he took us around one day and we found a place we liked. Narrowing it down to neighborhood really helped and you can put in your parameters and view places on the map in zillow.
