I need to write this out somewhere

I literally dropped what I was doing Sunday morning (pulled into target for lilly and turned around!) and drove to NC to be with my parents. My dads been in the hospital since Saturday. He's spent the last month having back and neck pain. My mom called 911 Saturday because he was totally out of it, and pretty much unresponsive. They've went through a handful of things it could be, including meningitis (which they have finally ruled out). He's been diagnosed with a blood infection. They have been working to find the source, and have ruled out spine, neck, and heart.

Since I've been here I've seen improvement in him, even though his white blood cell count has gone up a little. It's been trail and error of antibiotics because they don't know where it's coming from. They literally have every kind of doctor you can imagine looking at him and his blood work, scan, etc.

I ended up taking J with me. My mom and I trade off spending time with my dad -and watching J.

ETA- we just talked to his nurse is his white blood cell count is almost in the normal range from new antibiotics!


Update- after a week + of tests and repeat scan, they found an abcess on his spine, by his neck! They can't remove it and treat it here so they're transferring him to Duke. From there we'll meet with neurosurgeons to see they will remove and treat it. I'm not even sure when I'm headed back home. My mom and I are packed up waiting to go to Duke too. I feel like I'm throwing J off his normal routine because I took him with me. He's been really good through this all.

I am so sorry lulu21. My dad had a blood infection once about 8 years ago, it is very scary. In his case it was from a bladder infection that went untreated & progressed. It was a similar situation - he was very out of it, just wanting to sleep. I hope they get it figured out soon, good luck & hugs!

It's very unsettling not knowing. Yea he'll talk to us, then doze off and talk nonsense. He has no energy or strength.

This same thing happened to my mom. She was hallucinating though. She's fine now! They found the right antibiotic and everything cleared up. I hope they find the source of the infection and your dad feels better soon. Hugs!

It was the same for my dad. I was traveling out of state & called to talk to him. I knew something was wrong when he wouldn't talk to me. I called my (then) step mom & told her to get him to the ER asap. IIRC he was in the hospital for about a week on very strong IV antibiotics.

I'm assuming they have already ran a urine test, but ask just in case.

I'm so sorry. Sending good thoughts his way and I hope the new meds start working. My Mom has been in the hospital since 5/12 with an infection on her mitral valve and they are going t do surgery on Mon to repair or replace it. Having a sick parent can be so stressful.
