So scary, I'm glad you're okay and hope none of the pain is long term.
If you do get a crate, you'll want to secure that in the vehicle as well. We have a seatbelt harness for our dog if you're looking for another option.
I've been looking up the reviews of harnesses in accidents and am not liking what I see, so I'll be using a crate in the and definitely secured. My car is so small though, that is be securing it to prevent ejection from the car as opposed to movement within the car.
We use a secured soft sided crate for our dogs, it's definitely the way to go. Glad you're feeling a bit better, hope the stiffness dissipates soon.

Soft sided? What protection does that provide in an accident or roll over? I have a sub compact and given the damaged sustained from this accident I'm extremely concerned for the beagle in any future accidents. I might be slow but I'm not sure how a soft sided crate would make a difference?
We chose a soft sided crate so they won't be injured from being thrown against the side in an impact. It has a metal frame and made from heavy canvas, so it's not like it would crumple or anything.
I don't have good crate advise but I was sideswiped and have been going to PT for whiplash. The guy has done some "dry needling" which has helped a ton with the headaches.
