I don't know about antibiotic ointments but putting breast milk on the nipple and letting it air dry several times a day will help pretty much any nipple related problem. If you have a big infection it's obviously not going to cure you but it won't hurt.
The LC at my pediatrician's office also had me make this: 1. Bactroban ointment (perscription only) OR Polysporin ointment (over the counter) (antibiotic ointments)
2. Mono stat OR gynelotromin OR terazol (antifungal creams)
Mix equal amounts of the 3 ingredients and use a small dab on nipples after each feeding. You could mix the ingredients in a small bowl to have enough for the entire day.
It does not need to be washed off prior to feeding. They told me to use it 3-4 times a day only until the crack is healed. Then to use Lanolin (I used Earth Mama's Nipple Cream instead)to prevent cracking again.
My LC recommended Bacitracin and then washing it off with salt water baths (Dixie cups or shot glasses of super salty warm water held up against your boobs). After healing, she recommended olive oil in between feeds to prevent future cracks/blood blisters/rawness, etc.
@abbycobb Yep, I think it's the same thing. Our pedi's office has a little "store" of OTC stuff you can buy with no taxes, usually cheaper than at Target, and they sell all of the ingredients there so you don't have to get a separate Rx from your OB and make an extra stop at the pharmacy, so that's why they do it that way instead of with a Rx.
I tried all of the home remedies, but triple nipple cream was the only thing that really worked. Next time I have a baby, I'm getting a script for it when we leave the hospital.
Motherslove. It was literally a godsend. I let my cousin have it when I was done because she was bleeding and cracked. She called me in tears the next day because it worked so well! Haha. It stains clothes though, so that was a bummer but I love that stuff!
Along with the ointments already suggested, I used a nipple shield for a couple days when breastfeeding DS. It was enough to get me through the worst of it. However DS was a fabulous eater and had no nipple confusion whatsoever no matter how he was fed.
